    Heya,

I've been living in Ireland since August last year. I was finally able to find a job that I will start in 2 weeks time. Now my question is if I can avoid being put on emergency tax? I have my PPS number for a few months already and bank is set up as well.

Just want to know what I am missing to avoid emergency tax. It's my first job here and I am still rather new to all this tax stuff. Very confusing...

    Thanks for reading =3

Hi and congrats on the new job.

As it is your first employment in Ireland, in order to avoid having to apply emergency tax your employer will need to complete and send off a Form 12A to Revenue (http://www.google.ie/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CBYQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.revenue.ie%2Fforms%2Fform12a.pdf&rct=j&q=form%2012A&ei=HHm9TeOBN8y5hAeh24DbBQ&usg=AFQjCNEvdjYO16wZzu1pv_OiDXwckLU3OQ&sig2=o5NnTwyXL23v9swHcWo5sQ&cad=rja)

you can do this yourself straight away rather than waiting till you actually start the job. You can download the 12A form and ring your new employer for their company registration number. If you do end up paying emergency tax for a week or two you will get it refunded as soon as you have your own tax credits sorted out.

Thanks a lot for the replies. Will see that I can call my new employer tomorrow and take care of this.

also, when you are on emergency tax for the first 4 weeks you get an emergency tax credit (which is 35e per week).
So, you would pay 41% straight away, not until after week 8. but as said before once you do get your tax credits you will get any tax you have paid on the emergency basis back, as your tax credits will back date to the start of the year.

Note that it is the repsonsibility of the employee to complete the Form 12A, not the employer.
