    hi gang

    one of these guys:

    http://www.algema.de/export/sites/www.algema.de/images/navigation/startbild.jpg

i have a full license, and am just wondering if i can drive a car transporter trailer on this license, or must i do a separate test for this size trailer?

    thanks

    ed

Yes, if the Design Gross Vehicle Weight (DGVW) of the trailer is >750kg you will need a new licence/test

    see : http://www.rsa.ie/RSA/Vehicles-and-Legislation/Vehicle-Standards/Trailers/

    WRONG.

How many times it can be repeated here.

On B category licence you can tow a trailer if it fulfils any of below two conditions.

    1. Trailer GVW (gross vehicle weight) is not bigger than 750kg.

    2. Trailer GVW is not bigger than towing car unladen weight, and sum of trailer GVW and towing car GVW is not greater than 3500kg.

If any of above 2 conditions is fulfilled, you can tow that trailer with B licence.

For anything heavier you need EB category.

OP - trailer from the picture will definitely need EB category.

Only case which I can think of which B category would be enough is a car of about 2000kg GVW (1500kg unladen weight) for towing, and a trailer of GVW 1500kg and unladen weight of about 500kg.

With such a setup you could take legally a car up to 1000kg onto the trailer.

But it would be very hard to find such trailer (with GVW 1500kg) and you would be limited to towing only very small cars.

So answering your question in general - Yes. You need to do EB licence to be using a car transporter trailer.

True as CiniO says, if you do the calculations though it essentially does mean an EB licence is needed for trailers over 750kg, if your pulling with anything bigger than a golf/corolla, as most factory built trailers would be 1500kg plus. There is a major issue in Ireland with so many 'home built' and backyard built trailers with no weight stamp or certified hitch.

By the way OP, what are you planning to pull the transporter with?

thanks for the help folks, il have to get teh eb license then, any ideas how much it would cost, and what this test involves, if u already have a regular car license?

i currently drive a xsara hdi, but my plan is to buy a honda accord ctdi executive tourer.

If, like me, you got your B licence before the days of the theory test, you'll have to sit one. Then apply for your provisional and wait the obligatory 6 months. its standard fee for the test. (65 I think) check RSA website. Suggest you take a lesson beforehand just to help with small things that might catch you out. (I assume you're ok with pulling and reversing etc.)

But, the EB test must be done in a van or 4x4. Also if towing vehicle is newer than 04 the trailer must be fully enclosed box trailer..wierd rule. Older than 04 then flat trailer is ok. (Luckily for me - 03 cruiser and 14ft flatbed)
Again RSA site will confirm this.

Also check the rated towing capacity of the accord, should be ok, around 1600kg I'd imagine. Wouldn't think the xsara has that capacity. But depends on what you plan to carry on the trailer.

OP, you will need the trailor endorsement.

There's an awfully confused load of crap posted...

In fairness I think that has been established. we're just giving the OP some info by way of a heads-up, just as he asked for. Reading back over my own posts, they seem pretty clear. And the info is correct, as I've been there and done it and checked all of the legality.

P.s, not a personal attack, but its spelled trailer, its a thing that irritates me on posts and ads. Sorry OCD kicking in....
