the gf's macbook pro was taking about 10 minutes to boot so as we don't have the install disks anymore we bought the snow leopard upgrade. i formatted the hard drive and installed it. everything went fine but it is still taking 10 minutes to boot. i've tried repairing permissions and repairing the disk but apparently there's nothing wrong. so I'm guessing this is a hardware problem????? we got a new mainboard for it last year as it failed. its 2 and a half years old.

perhaps the hard drive is no dying? download aja sytem test and see that read and write speed you are getting. http://www.aja.com/ajashare/AJASystemTest.zip

it could also be a bad memory chip.

Are applications slow to open as well? Are you getting many spinning beach balls?

i tried this and these were the results for a 1GB file at the highest frame rate

    I/O Transactions
    Frame MB/sec
    Read Write
    00.0 54.7 52.9
    01.0 59.5 58.9
    02.0 59.3 59.3
    03.0 59.5 59.4
    04.0 61.6 61.9
    05.0 60.6 60.6
    06.0 55.3 54.7
    07.0 57.3 55.7
    08.0 59.3 59.4

    14.0 59.5 59.4
    15.0 59.3 59.3
    16.0 59.6 58.3
    17.0 62.0 62.0
    18.0 59.0 59.0
    19.0 55.3 55.1
    20.0 58.2 56.6
    21.0 59.3 58.2
    22.0 59.5 58.3
    23.0 61.1 60.6
    24.0 62.1 60.9
    25.0 55.3 53.7
    26.0 56.5 56.7
    27.0 59.5 59.5
    28.0 59.3 58.2
    29.0 60.0 57.1

however there was no option to select a video device

i will look for a program online now to test the memory

i dont have many applications installed but i opened up around 6 at once and there was no problems. however before i formatted it when photoshop and illustrator were used they were very sluggish and the beachball appeared every time i used a new tool

Start up in verbose mode and see what is causing the delay.

all sounds well. perhaps your graphics card is faulty.... did you say your machine has already had the logic board replaced due to Nvidia issue? making it an aluminium macbook pro as opposed to a unibody

i have been busy with exams lately.......
i started in verbose mode and the writing that came up disappeared after 30 seconds and a blue screen appeared for about 8 minutes

it is an aluminum case was thinking it probably is the graphice card

it has started booting up normally now
    i don't know why i havn't done anything
