Hi, I've just done one year of a level 6 course and am dropping out to apply for a level 8 course next year, meaning I will have to re-do my first year of college.

Now I'm just wondering will I still qualify for the free fee's as it will be my first year in a degree course (level 6 = higher certificate).

I know I will have to pay the capitation fee (going up to €2000 i think), but I'm not sure if the government will pay my tuition fee's or not..

If anyone has any info on this it would be greatly appreciated as I want to start looking into loan options etc if I do have to pay the tuition.

    Thanks in advance!

On studentfinance.ie it says that you qualify for a level 8 grant if it's your first time in doing a level 8 course. I went to the VEC today to ask if this was true and they said that it was in previous years it was, but they wont know for definite until the new application forms come out in a few weeks

I am fairly sure that if it is a degree year that you've never done before then you qualify to get the grant. My sister dropped out in her second year of a level 7 or 8, then a few years later she went back as a mature student and did a level 6, and then managed to get into year 3 of a level 7, and she did all of that without paying tuition fees.
The only thing is, she went back as a mature student, so I'm not 100% sure otherwise. Though if someone changes courses but they don't have to start back at 1st year, I don't think they have to pay tuition fees, so...
