Dell 15R - Win7 crash.

My son's Dell laptop has failed - the Hard Drive is damaged.
I've replaced the drive and everything seems fine. I installed Ubuntu as a test. It works but not all peripherals are working ... not important.

I intend to go back to Win 7.......
However, He did not make a set of system restore disks, and Dell do not provide win 7 cds with the laptop.

So - where to go now ?

How do i get a copy of Win 7 -we have a key on the underneath of the laptop.

Would Dell provide a replacement set of CDs -for a price ?
It's still under warranty -but I assume that does not cover screwing the software install and not making your system cds.

Or would they provide a drive under warranty with the software installed ?
I assume it was ok to remove the drive. It's Saturday - we needed it immediately..........

Any advice on where to go next ?

    A.

They usually require you to send the laptop back to them.

    This thread maybe.

    I've never done it.

If you're still under warranty, get it back to them ASAP and have them sort it out.
Don't tell them you replaced the drive though.
Also if possible, *stipulate that you want the proper factory image and recovery partition on the new drive.

*Provided that is, you don't have any major file recovery requirements here?

Think I'll do that - re-install the old drive.

All attempts to revive it have failed.

If they were aware of the drive swap - the unit's being opened, would that invalidate a warranty ? They provide the service manuals on line, which provide the possibility of a user doing that kind of thing.

I've sent bare drives back under warranty before, but now that I think of it , they were from desktops.

We will have to live without the lost files :(
