Mart prices

Sold some cattle for my inlaws last night and this morning.

Last Night Limousin heifers off black cows (some black and some red) made up to 400 with their weight. Best heifer was off a black white head cow and stock limousin bull - she was 11 months old and 450kg and made EUR900. Youngest heifer was 240kg and born on 02/11/2010 and she made EUR640 (Red limousin heifer).

Sold a red limousin bullock this morning - very growthy. Born on 11/04/2010 and weighed 500kg - made EUR1150. He only got meal for the last 4 weeks.

Sold 7 in total and they made over EUR6000. Last year they had 7 too. They were almost EUR1500 up on last year in total.

Serious prices. Farmers are cracked. I saw 3 year old red limousin bullocks today that weighed 500kg+- and they struggled to make EUR1100. Was trying to add up the amount of money it took to put them that far - over 3 years, it was quite a bit in silage, dosing, grass and testing. I can't understand how farmers could justify the price for our bullock above.

Even bad cattle that had lot of age in them but looked like they had been starved went for serious prices.

Very small amount of cattle in both marts but it was wedged around the rings. It was nice to see the dealers around the ring shaking their heads in disbelief, unable to compete with ordinary farmers for cattle.

A neighbour who usually buys weinlings at this time of year, keeps them for the summer and sells them in the back end has decided that he won't buy any this year at all because he can't see himself making money on them at all. He was asking our opinion on buying old cows and fattening them for the factory - Madness. Imaging the trouble you'd have with them coming in heat, summer mastitis etc. Will cows still be as expensive in the autumn?????

I'm happy with the prices, but I don't know where its all going to end.

We were looking to buy some weanlings or even more sucks to go along with what we have but prices are unreal... Fine if it keeps going but buying stock now could leave headaches later if prices fall..

Are folks stocking up thinking of reference years or is there a real belief that prices are up for the long term???

There's nothing like the sight of strong spring grass, to drive farmers mad.
Maybe a good shower of rain will cool things down a bit.:D

good shower of rain will put the grass out over the hedges at the moment with ground temps so farmers will go even more mad

It really is a sellers market..sold a british fr bullock yesterday 2 years old. approx 550kgs for €850:eek: couldnt believe it, for a friesian!!!!!

Just curious as to why the beef prices are going up, when the eu is negotiating to let South American beef into europe and farmers are protesting that it will kill prices.

Have 2 CHX coming up on 22 months and I reckon they are averaging 440/450kg could be more but not sure. Don't know whether to sell em in the next few weeks or keep em till the back end of the year. I know they won't be factory ready here by then. What might they make now anyone know

Was in Carrigallen Yesterday for a while & generally the 500Kg was making around the €1200.
More of a demand for hungry stock, rather than fleshy ones

Let them go, you mightn't get it at the back end of the year. Great trade sure at the moment.
