BusBuddy - Galway Bus Network App

    Hi,

    Myself and a couple of friends made a free app for the Galway bus network. It maps the bus routes and shows the next buses due at each stop (according to timetable).

    Turn on GPS and it'll anonymously share the user location on the network with a little android icon... giving the live position of buses. :) It currently has routes 9 and 3.

    Scan to install;

    There's also a basic temporary web interface at www.busbuddy.mobi .

    We've tested it a little and it seems to require a fairly good processor to run, it strugles with the HTC Wildfire but seems to work nicely on the HTC Desire. Getting a lock on GPS and mobile connections on the move is a bit tricky too.

    All feedback welcome. If you're on the network please enable GPS and give the live tracking a go.

    To install you will have to enable apps from unknown sources as it's not on the market yet. Settings > Applications > Unknown Sources .

    Thanks,

    Joe

    Cant test it live at the moment, but needs more routes, but I'm sure you know that.

    I cant see why it should be such a strain on resources if google maps does the whole network and gps thing fine. Is there a way of integrating it into google maps instead of a separate app?

    Yeah it's only two routes for now, if we finish it all the routes will get added eventually.

    If you get a chance to try it out on the bus in Galway let me know how it goes! Turn on GPS and it should map your location. This goes via the server so will be presented the same way any other random users on the network would be.

    Not sure whether to keep going with the project as the gps and mobile connection might not be reliable enough when on the moving bus....

    Why not? It works fine in a car so why not on a bus?

    Found that unless sitting at the window seat, the GPS couldn't lock on with the large flat roof. (what it ideally needs is a gps feed from the bus companies, with a receiver on the roof).

    When it does connect the accuracy isn't great but to get around this it's now it's accepting within a certain distance from the route, then snapping to the route... which improves things a lot.

    Not too heavily tested yet though so would like to hear how people find it and on what phone.
