Desire S or Galaxy S?

Which would you choose any why? Will I regret not getting the 4" screen if I take the Desire S?

It's time for a new phone - it'll be my first smartphone.

I've been using a SE C902 for almost 3 years and been quite happy with it, I like the small size, decent battery like and support for ActiveSync. Screen is now cracked and Keypad is starting to fall apart and I feel that smartphones have matured enough that now is the time to jump from feature phones.

It looks like Android is the way forward for SmartPhones, and I've narrowed down my selection to these two.

The price is similar enough with the Desire S being slightly more expensive. The Galaxy S looks nice, but feels quite big (wide) in the hand. I haven't been able to play with working demos of either :-(

Which would you choose any why? Will I regret not getting the 4" screen if I take the Desire S?

Desire S without a doubt. I've been using it for a week now and am really impressed with it. It's capable of anything I throw at it. Battery is good & works really smoothly. + I'm a big fan of HTC sense especially the onboard maps and navigation. 3.7" screen is very nice, and I've no need for a bigger screen. Build quality is great too.

I just realised that Samsung are launching the Galaxy S II.

Isn't the S a very old model? Is it the one that has major issues with GPS & the cheap plastic body.

After reading the Engadget review of the Galaxy S II - either go for that or the HTC, but the original galaxy is old news...

It's old yes, well June 2010 but getting a gingerbread update, and still a quite powerful machine, goods deal on it as they are clearing in anticipation of Galaxy S II, that one will be too big (4.3" screen) and too expensive I think.

Do you notice any "Grip of death" issues with Wifi or 3G on your Desire S?

No, not at all. I was kind of conscious of it at first because I often browse with my finger over the top of the phone. I have to say, its a real workhorse of a phone. Has done everything asked of it with any issues...

my friend bought the galaxy s.. sorry i shoud say got it free.. on 12 month contract.

you will get them all pretty cheap now because the galaxy S II is out today (in uk)
not sure of arrival to ireland.. will be network specific but im looking at it and its basically saying its gonna be super quick.. basically if you wait you are guaranteed to have top of the range phone until the end of the year (then the iphone 5 and galaxy S3 are coming out-same spec as a netbook planned it seems)
price of phone will be 600euro sim free so probably around the 250-300mark on cheapest contract?

depends what you want it for. the current phones really have everything you want i think.. only problem is none of them really addressed the battery life issue.
dual core phones supposedly will address this.
i have a htc desire for 6 months now.. and charging it once a day or every second day (generally 1.5 days - which is pointless as you have to charge it midday, which is why everyone says every day) well its annoying. i had to get a charger for my car and charge on the go.

anyway its up to you. i can say you wont be unhappy. But if you do want one which will run everything then get the galaxy s2. games in 3 months time will be developed for it specifically and may run laggy on older phones... typical examples currently is angry birds which doesnt run on the wildfire...

in terms of web browsing, applications, facebook and all other social stuff you are pretty set with a current generation phone. its like getting a cheap laptop. it will do all your basic stuff, but if you want it for games etc then you may have issues

as for the 2 phones you are considering i cant comment on specifically... just answering your question about the galaxy s2 :)

Kenyard: which htc do you have? desire or desire s? id heard the s battery is ok...
I have a galaxy s at the moment as meteor gave it to me temporarily until the desire s gets back in stock.
I'm really loving everything about the galaxy s, but needing to charge the battery once a day is a nightmare coming off the normal phones (this is my first touchscreen too). I'm praying the desire s has a better one, or im going to chance one of these:

Also have the C902 for about three years - and thinking of getting the Desire S. It seems 3 have the best deal on data for smart phones compared with the rest. I am with Meteor and spend about 40 quid a month on payg, so will probably take up their 40 euro bill pay option with 2gb data plan.

galaxy s still is a premium phone and you wont get one cheap.

the mk 2 looks the business, I was going to get one but frankly could absolutely not justify paying 600euro for a phone.

quite happy with the galaxy s mark 1 with 40gigs of memory.

Desire S is better i think, first of all it has HTC Sense and i think it's much better than Samsung's SenseUI!
