Can i put a diesel engine into a petrol car?

Im driving a 3litre v6 and things have changed recently.

I have a budget of about 2 grand to buy a diesel
    - either a car or
    - gut a 1.6HDI engine and put it in my own.

I love my own car and to replace it with an equiv diesel would be expensive

    Is it possible?
    Thanks!

i would say maybe but not on that budget. you would possibly need to replace tank and pumps along with full pipes, ecu, imobiliser if coded to ecu and probably lots of other little bits depending on the type of car.

I dont think it would be worth it. might be better to put a smaller petrol engine in as less would need changing

Forget converting it. It would just become completely worthless if it's even possible. And it would cost thousands to do. On top of all that you'd find it difficult to insure too.

Buy a cheap diesel car instead.

    Thanks Guys!
I cant decide if should change or not...

Im driving a 3litre v6 at the moment and love it! :)
I get 30mpg and im happy with that. Tax is awful, but its only 1x a year
But next yr i have to move to Clonmel from Limerick for 5+months and after that i might have more long commuting for another 5 months

A 1.4 diesel will save me almost a grand on tax a year.
But i do love my V6...

Aaarh! All im doing now is wasting time when i should be working/watching the game...

Keep the V6 and put it off the road for the ten months.
Then buy a small second car to use for the duration.

How much would this cost do you think?

Do not entertain ANY thoughts of changing the engine to save on fuel or motor tax. It would be cheaper to get a more tax friendly and fuel efficient car.

It would be physically possible to do so but cost prohibited. Remember it is not just the engine that you have to change, gearbox and other parts would also have to be changed. Also something like a 1.6 diesel engine would struggle for both performance and fuel economy in something that currently has a 3.0 litre v6 pushing it around.

As suggested take the big engined car off the road and buy a cheaper car for the 5+ months. Even explore the possibility of staying in cheap accomodation during the week in Clonmel and only make the trip back and forth at weekends.

I'm curious...what car has this 3.0 V6? Alfa GTV? Mondeo ST220? Or something else entirely?

For some reason when I started reading the thread I immediately thought 'Maxima'.

At a guess I'm thinking 406 Coupe as the OP has mentioned a 1.6HDi engine :)

Op, buy a bagernomics mobile, then park off your beloved car.

I parked off skyline and bought Mondeo for 500eu, 250eu to pass nct, service and a few bushings.

    Savings on tax: 550eu
    Savings on insurance: 600eu
Savings on petrol: from 50eu per week to 20eu... That's considering it 1.6 petrol, not some diesel.

Your dignity will drop, but you will notice a few notes I'm pocket.

    Its a 406 coupe.
    Thanks for the help...

The thing is, if i do buy a banger then it could fall apart. Thats part of the reason i love the 406. I've had 2 and not a minutes trouble. Love them!

I am tempted by a 307 1.4Hdi. Instant saving of almost 1k on tax, but id have to spend about 3.5k to get one...
That would mean selling the 406... :(

    Dammit, why didnt i get the 406 coupe in a 2.2Hdi :(
