Hyundai A321 HDMI flickering - now with video....

My trusty Hyundai A321 HDMI has started to flicker when it's turned on from dead.
You may remember these, Xtravision did a deal on them around 2007, they got great reviews, avforums has a mega thread on them.
This one has been on pretty much constantly since it was bought, only ever connected to a pc via VGA.
There's a firmware update available for these that increases the resolution slightly to 1366x768 but I haven't bothered looking into it.

It flickers when powered on after being "hard powered off" overnight ie switched off at power switch at back of tv.
I usually put it into standby, wait a few seconds and try again (if I don't put it into standby it'll do that itself anyway after about 15 seconds).
After a few rounds of this, it'll stop flickering, displaying fine again.
By flickering I mean cycling between picture and black screen.

I've noticed a slight buzzing noise from inside the tv in the last 6 months or so.

Any ideas folks? I'll have to do any repairs myself, can't see it being economic to repair when new 32" are €250 on amazon.

    Brrumph.

Is it even realistic to think I could do any repairs or replace components myself? Good level of tech know how and have repaired appliances before.

It's a 32" LCD TV in case I didn't make that clear in the first post.

    back with a bump.

managed to remember to catch the flickering on video.

here it is as a zipped mpeg4 (converted from an m4v).

You can make out the flickering, and it stopping.

The camera doesn't pick up the speed of the flickering though. I'd say it flickers twice as fast (with an audible pop at each flicker) when viewed with the naked eye.

    Any ideas anyone?

lol amazon have some very good deals at the moment alright.

If it was a simple fix I'd like do do it though, there's plenty of life left in the screen I reckon.

    kabump.

The problem has got slightly worse now, the tv flickers for about 30 seconds everytime it's switched on from standby now.
Not just when it's been in standby for a few hours.

Presuming this will get worse until it doesn't switch on at all.

Any suggestions for self repair welcome.

    Thread from the dead.

    1. The TV now turns itself on and off when it's turned on from cold(standby light goes from green to red).
    2. It stops after two mins at off (standby light red).
    3. Turn it on again and the screen flickers on/off for about 4mins, stopping at black screen (standby light still green).
    4. Turn TV off.
    5. Repeat step 3.

After about 10minutes of this the screen flickering slows, then stops and the picture is fine.

Surely someone has some idea of how to do a self-repair on this?

Mods, could you move this if I'm in the wrong forum.

Almost definitely a power supply issue. Dried out caps most likely stopping one of the rails reaching full voltage. Any TV repair shop should be able to sort it out.

My advice is to get it fixed now before any more serious damage is caused to the set.
