20 Year Investment

We had achild recently and are anxious to start an investment fund fdor him.
We are looking at investing €250 per month over twenty years, obviously this would be index linked and increment at 5% per annum (ballpark).
A 50/50 split between two investments would be our preferred option.
Has anyone any advice as to what we should be investing in, we're looking for nothing flash just two solid, sound investment options.
    All ideas etc. greatly appreciated;).

    Mining companies

    Oil companies

    Coca Cola

Whoever makes hip/knee replacements and heart stents (that sort of thing) because the baby boomers are going to be pensioners by then.

    IBM

    Forestry

I'd avoid Tech companies myself. Unless you can spot the next Google/Facebook/Apple early. It's out there now.

20 years is along time though.

I am interested in doing something similar (although more modest).
I would only invest about e150 per year over the next 3 years & then park the investment for about 20 years, depending on reinvesting dividend & the compounding effect.

I would rather have shares in the childs name (with me being able to manage the portfolio).

Are there any options available to me?
(note: management fees would need to be close to zero as my investment is very modest)

    TIA

Ah lad , €150 is too little to buy shares with as it will get eaten up with commissions.
Surely the banks do some type of incentive saver accounts for children? Let them learn to manage there own monies thats the best investment you can make for them;)

the markets crash on average every 10-13 years , so steer clear of 20 year investments ,
do a 5 year investment , when thats up consider something different , as to the type of investment ...... try some of the banks investment packages (not irish banks) , but swiss banks ...perhaps HSBC , something like that

Thanks for your reply. Any advice for a more realistic investment per share (e500 to e1000), very little trading over the term?
