TOP pundits in Russia are calling for Aiden McGeady to be made captain of Spartak Moscow.

A brilliant individual performance by the former Celtic star helped his team to a 1-0 win over Spartak Nalchik, lifting the club off bottom place in the league.

McGeady set up the only goal of the game and ex-Spartak and Soviet international star Yevgeni Lovchev said: "He should be the captain.

"He is far more suited to the role than any of the Brazilians or the Russians who have done the job so far this season.

"He only joined Spartak last summer but it is hard to imagine them without him now."

Vladimir Radionov, an ex-Lokomotiv player and Russian Under-21 team boss, added: "Spartak are lucky to have McGeady. His assist for the goal was sheer brilliance."

Leading pundit Igor Rabiner was also full of praise for the 25-year-old, saying: "McGeady was the real leader of Spartak in that game. Unlike many of his team-mates, he came out to fight.

"I do not know what motivated him. Was he fighting for the club, his own good name or was it just an unbendable spirit he brought from Scottish club football?"

Strange that they were bottom of the league, although their season has only just started hasn't it?

Fair play to McGeady, best thing he ever did was move over there and I'm sure it was a tough decision to move to Russia. He seems to have improved a lot.

Love the skill at 3:44. Going by some of the clips in that video I'd say the opposition left back was not enjoying himself.

In fairness he was Celtic's standout player for a while, won POTY and young POTY in the same season. Did well in the Champions league too. But he looks to have stepped it up in Russia and is doing better in the green. Fair play to him, hope he keeps it up.

But then so were Villareal in the semi and they've been playing some very good stuff in LaLiga this season. Or maybe it's just that Porto are a team on the verge of greatness who destroyed both Spartak and Villareal.

He can't speak Russian yet so I'm not sure about being made captain tbh. Delighted for him though.
