    Hi all,
just looking for a bitof advice with regards getting fit and healthy. I've found out quite recently that I'm ill and have been suffering with terrible stomache/bowel problems for over two years. I thought my diet was pretty good as I eat a lot of fruit and veg and hardly ever take aways but I do eat a looot of chocolate! I really need advice on getting fit and losing a bit of weight over the next few months so that I can keep my health at its best.

    Here are my stats:
    mid twenties
    5'10
    11ish stone
    small frame
    hate gyms!

    Thanks!

    Hi Laylah

Sorry to hear about your health problems.

You might find the Health and fitness forum more useful.
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=252

There are quite alot of enquires like yours over there and the folks there are very helpful. This forum is more for discussing theory of health problems, HSE, medical education stuff like that. I'm sure a helpful mod can move this thread over if you'd like them to.

That being said my two cents worth:

Try to make changes you think you can stick to. There is no point being hardcore for a week and then giving up. So start with changes you think you can maintain. Sounds like your diet is good apart from chocolate so the thing there is to cut back the chocolate.

And at same time try to increase your exercise. How to begin really depends alot on where you are starting from. But a good rule of thumb is to try and do some form of exercise to raise your heart rate for about 30 mins 3 or 4 times a week. Be it walking, running, swimming, cycling. Pick something you like and something you think you can stick to. You can diversify later when you reach a base fitness level.

Other thing is to think of is other activities. Like salsa dancing or yoga or martial arts stuff like that. Stuff with a social element that will keep you engaged can be good. It doesn't always have to be pumping iron in the gym :)

    Anyhow good luck with it!!

Edit: Hmmm since you said you've recently found out you are ill I feel I should add the caveat of checking with your doctor what exercise you should or should not do. But you probably know that already!
