Im currently using a stock starter set that i bought a few years ago, playing off 18 but looking to get that moving south. Have taken lessons recently and seeing good progress. The pro did say to me though that the irons im using are pretty terrible. he said the woods are fine and ive bought my own wedges and putter so its only irons i need to get. He said he doesnt care but just to get a well built set from a reputable brand.

I have freed up about 400 to spend, so currently i have it down to these two sets Callaway x-22's or Mizuno MX-100's.

Now there are several wilson sets sub 400, but the starter set i have are wilson, and to be honest i wouldnt mind a change but its worth it i would look again.

Has anyone any opinion on these two sets? I like the x-22s, but some of my mates are big mizuno fans. I cant afford custom fit, but what i want are something for improvement, but that are relatively forgiving as i get used to my new swing.

    Any thoughts learned ones?

I would not buy new to be honest. I don't see the point if your not going to get custom fit. It wouldn't be terrible to have new clubs but for the money you have it would open up a lot of options second hand. Actually for that money you could get a tidy set. Thats just my opinion maybe someone else might urge you to but new.;)

Also do you know what type of shaft you are after ..? If not I'm sure your pro could point you in the right direction..

I would also take a look at Ping G10s and Tm Burners.

Also if your working hard at your game and improving I would urge you to be careful not to buy clubs that are designed completely for game improvement. If your getting lessons and playing a bit you could easily drop a few shots during the summer and hence out grow your clubs. I think if your planning on putting in a bit of effort some forgiving "players" clubs probably the way to go.

If you've definitely narrowed it down to those two sets I'd say whichever you like the look of most. From what you say, I'd recommend the X-22 out of the two sets. The Callaway "x" series of irons are a bit of a classic in all their incarnations and will hold their value much better.

I wouldn't worry too much about outgrowing a set of X-22 to be honest, they're plenty good enough for any handicap, especially with the steel shafts. If you're off 18 they'll do you til you get well into the single figures, and beyond if you want. A few friends of mine with low handicaps have used X-14, 16 or 18 in the past and it certainly hasn't hindered them. No point in making the game hard(er).

Mizuno do make great irons and you wouldn't go wrong with them either but IMO its their forged irons, from MX200 upwards, that really set them apart. I'm a huge fan of their MP range and my last two sets have been MP60 & MP52, but from what your post says I'd go with the Callaways.

I'd also add that a custom fit might be the best €50 you could spend........

Now, if the Op was able to get a good condition 2nd hand set of those it's a different matter....:)

Actually he just might be lucky and find a new set of them somewhere for under his budget, they are an "old" model I think this year.

Not in stock at present but a 3-PW set of Mizuno MX200s are going for €391 here

Might be worth enquiring if they're likely to restock them

Hit a few sets first and see
Get a loan of some irons and play 18
No point in shelling out till you've actually hit them and liking the look of a club is also a good start

Try golfbidder.co.uk, I guess all secondhand sets would be in your budget.

Bought the MX-100 last year. They look a bit clunky, but they do a great job. So easy to hit. I don't think i've duffed a single iron shot since i got them (12 hc)

    Highly recommended

Thanks for the input guys. I have hit c. 20 shots with the x-22s and mx-100s into the nets in my local golf store, and while i liked both, certainly the x-22 felt crisper and cleaner and i think it looked much more appealling to me at address.

On the shaft, i will be getting steel, no interest in graphite. I dont struggle for length with my irons, so its purely consistency and control im looking for. Is it not the case that steel shafted clubs are standard anyways, or is there different variations of steel i should be looking at?

i was going to impulse buy this weekend, but i think i will wait and book a lesson with my pro this week, and run my potential purchase past him and see what he thinks.

On the mx-200's, are they just the same as teh 100's, just forged instead of cast, or am i missing something? forged mizunos under 400 would be nice.

As you are an improving 18 handicap guy, the X 22's may be the better option.
Or as others suggested here, the MX 200's may be the way to go either. You might get them for your budget if you search.

second hand here (reputable site) for just under €400 including delivery

    http://www.golfbidder.co.uk/product/394634/Mizuno_MX-200.html

(cheaper options available on same site)

Go back to that shop and hit some MX 200s, see what you think.
I've never hit 100's and 200's so can't advise on the difference.

    Best of luck.

I would say go for the x22s. From what you have said they are the ones that you like the feel and look of - being confident with your clubs is essential. I understand that people love the Mizunos and they are a lovely club but you have mentioned twice that you like the x22s so I would go with your first opinion.

Just in regard to the shafts hurleronditch, shafts are broken up into different flex's for different swing speeds. So if you swing fast you might need a stiff flex or if you swing a little slower you might need a regular flex.

Or if you swing like a girl you might need a ladies flex :p Just joking ..

Not sure if you already knew this but just thought I'd mention it just in case. If you are unsure best to ask your pro he would be able to point you in the right direction.

I'm going to bow out of giving any more advice here on clubs as I realize I am tainted as I play Mizunos and have strong feeling for them.(Weird huh) And when people ask me about forgiving clubs I would usually point them in the direction of Pings (G10's) because I found them to be the most forgiving club I have ever hit.

But what your pro said was 100% any brand name clubs are usually of a decent quality and could get you around once you know how to play them. If the Callways do it for you pick em up and get swinging. They are suited to your handicap and if you get going well this summer who knows what clubs you might want to play in the future. Best of Luck anyway.

Thanks for all the help guys!!

Kph, im well aware of different flexes for different swing speeds, but on a set of off the shelf middle of the road irons, is there not just one type of steel shaft?

I'm 90% set on a new set of x22s, have booked a lesson for Thursday night so I'll chat to Michael and see what he thinks before I hand over any cash.

I'll let ye know how I get on!!

If you are still interested in the mizuno mx100, I may be selling mine in the next week or so. They have only been used three times and have a 1/2 inch longer steel shaft ( customised by golfstyle Galway). The clubs are in immaculate condition and I can pm you photos and details if you are interested.

Between myself and a couple of mates we have all the clubs mentioned here. If I were you I would stop seeking others opinions and go with your instincts and preferences for looks or whatever. MX100 MX200 X22, they are all fine clubs and until/unless you get into low single digits you will not need to change. You wont go wrong with any of them.

Hey all, many months later I finally got my new irons this week. I stayed away from the callaways, and got custom fit by my pro. Ended up with Nike vr pro combo 3-pw, with dynagold superlite s300 stiff shafts. A forged iron, and really I got a great deal on them, they feel great and been hitting them well on the range. First on course attempt this evening so I'll see how they go.

Just said I'd update and thank people for the advice!!
