out of interest what breed did they buy with OUR money ? 2 of my cattle broke into my neighbours today , he's a suckler farmer, he has smashing cows and weanlings , they are simmentals and limo's lovely stock , my friesian heifers where like anorexics beside them

3 charolais can't wait to see how their calving goes another disaster waiting to happen!!

Yeah seems to be more of the same. When they went for blondes for heifers last year I was shocked. Clearly they aren't able to provide full cover of staff at claving so an easier calving breed than CH might have been wise. Are they doing any AI? probably not if they're running 3 (expensive) bulls.

Very disapointed that they havent brought in any traditional breeds to see if the lower imput system leaves a better margin at the end

no buyers for milking heifers-only 40 on offer with only about 10sold-top price of 1200, saw one light heifer sold for 820:eek:

auctioneer said the arse fell out of the market at last weeks sale- avg down 400euro last week

    some smashing stock on offer

Agree with this bogman, it's ridiculous that they aren't doing a trial using Hereford/Angus bulls on a section of the cows and finishing progeny through Hereford Prime or Cert Angus...there have been numerous successful reports from farmers using this system so it's disappointing that teagasc don't see fit to test a potentially very viable option.

The use of a hereford/angusXbritish friesian cow as a suckler dam in the herd should also be looked at. These cows crossed wtih a continental bull regularly produce top cattle and are very easy kept. What harm could it do to test a few of these?...teagasc are meant to be researching to find efficient suckler systems (and spending plenty money while they're at it), but then they clearly omit traditional breeds from the test...doesn't make sense to me...

you'd also buy a decent Hereford/Angus bull for half the price of the charolais!

give them a chance they will buy your breeds next year after sending the ch bulls to the factory:rolleyes:

NOOOOOoooo please don't let them near an angus or hereford prime scheme:eek:, they'll only fcuk it up for the rest of us trying to make an honest living from beef farming!!

things must be gone to pot altogether when justin isnt writing about them, does anyone know what happened the heifers found to be not in calf that time did they cull or keep them on ?

Those heifers I think were slaughtered last back end after weaning, then fattened, have a look in that link above.

And if they do manage to turn a profit, the'll give the GROSS profit/hectare.
If it does proove one thing though, big business will never pose a threat to the family farm. Too many farm families willing to put in long hours for low pay.
