I went and did a stupid thing today......(was a different thing yesterday)!!!

The oil light on the dash kept coming on when i started the car so i assumed it needed oil.
All of following was done in haste and lack of patience!
I checked the dipstick...couldnt find the marker! Went with the only mark i saw! Which was in hindsight and a laughing mechanic later...about three inches too high.
I put ........5Litres of semi synthetic into it....yes 5 Litres!!
I got about ten kilometres when the engine started making strange noise rapid intermittent hisses and a large plume of smoke out the back.
Pulled over and the smoke stopped thought he turbo might have blown as the smoke was blue!
Started again and the car started fine and then started to lose power and rev uncontrollably, lot of smoke out the back!
at this point i stopped and my 1/2 hour of complete madness had ended.
Got it towed and the usual!

Someone please tell me the reality i am looking at! Mechanical reality that is!

You may need a new engine. That is the worst case, but quite possible.

That would be the worst case scenario yes! Wondering if anyone had any experience of this!

The engine still starts and goes forward and back! No smoke in first two gears or moving slowly!

    Dear God! 5 litres!?

Yes i dont do half measures. Gonna do a job do it right!
Was filling it and on the phone at the same time! 5Litres goes into an engine very quickly in conversational terms!

Not 100% certain, but I'd suggest stop driving it!

You shouldn't start the engine with that amount of oil in it. Did you get the excess out?

No the mechanic has it. Ill let him do it. Drove about ten kilometres and thats its! Wondering if there would be permanent damage!

Sounds like you've hydraulically locked the engine.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,714 ✭✭✭no1beemerfan

There probably was some oil in the engine to start with so your 5 litres could well mean at least 6 or 7 when it should only be around 4.5 and all that oil has to go somewhere so you have to have damage done especially as you drove it so far.

Be prepaired for bad news unfortunately.

You could have completely stuffed your engine. You won't know until normal oil levels are present and you drive it a bit.

Why would the engine still go into first and second gear if the engine was kaput!!!!
Would the engine not just lock up if the drive shaft or pistons were gooed up with oil?

Gear selection is to do with the gearbox, not the engine. Your foot is on the clutch so there's no drive to the motor.

in the worst case scenario your engine could be fighting to try compress the oil on the downward stroke of the piston which would give you a loss in power, if your lucky it could be a few seals gone and perhaps the sump gasket etc...

worst case youll need a new engine

i wouldnt expect this adventure to set you back anything less than 500 odd euro at best

Just for future reference blue smoke generally indicates the engine is burning oil. Clouds of black smoke would mean a turbo issue.

    Also 5 litres?!!

I would think there is a very very good chance that you have not hydraulically locked the engine, the uncontrollable revving and the smoke would indicate your car was actually burning the engine oil as fuel along with diesel fuel. Luckily for you it stopped when you turned off the ignition. Smoke was blue as the engine was burning the oil off. Your cat converter is quite likely damaged but that matters little on a diesel.

You might well get away quite lightly, I really doubt it's damaged. Time will tell.

and just for future reference, the oil light will always come on at start up along with a few other ones too...

I think your story might be a load of bullsh*t.

Nobody would think their car had a serious issue, then chat on the phone and dump in 5 litres of oil at the same time.

Either that or .. How many cars have you killed :pac::pac::pac:

Folks have thrown litres of water into their engine in advance of making a trip for no reason at all only for they heard someone on about it. OPs story is quite believable I think.

OP I did pretty much the exact same thing a few years ago. I was going for a run in the middle of exams so head was in the clouds. Never seen so much smoke in all my life.
I drained all the oil, topped it up again to the correct level and it was fine afterwards.
I couldn't believe how stupid a thing it was to do in retrospect.
I did it to an Opel, you may be lucky as Octavia's are resilient enough.

Thanks. The mechanic reckons hell just have to draib it and it should burn off....hopefully. Dont know why i would make this story up!!!! Just was in a world of my own at the time. Never thought about what i doing... It happens!!! Will update on the results.

Got it back today. Oil all drained out of it! €100 in all. Working great no more smoke:)

...though he never changed the starter motor(he was supposed to fix this recurring problem as its been there from the beginning). it clicks when i turn the ignition and nothing else.....will start new thread.

Great to hear its still alive, get your starter motor sorted now.

All part of the "fun" of motoring too, live and learn :)

Just re-installed an engine in a mates series Land Rover, a 200tdi without the turbo, the original conversion was an appalling bodge. He is the type that is really keen and plunges in feet first but is mechanically ignorant. We let him put the oil in, big mistake!! He put way to much in and we didn't realise he didn't even know how to read a dipstick

After a week or so it blew the rear crank seal so the engine has to come out again

HAppy out, good that the prophets of doom weren't correct. An auto spark would sort your starter fairly handy.

The prophets of doom!!! ha ha. I think people always try to give the worst possible scenario in case you dont prepare for it!
Mechanic rang to say it was the solenoid that kept getting stuck! I won't take his word for it until i take it for a spin!

Few taps of a hammer might get you going if you're stuck somewhere with the starter just clicking.
