Does the drive work on other computers?

My first thought is that it's not getting enough power from your netbooks usb port.

What OS do you have? XP/Vista/Windows 7 or linux or other?

Does the external Hard drive need drivers?

If you are using XP, try downloading Tweakui go to Drives and Checkmark a letter, e.g. "F"

If you are using Windows 7 download Windows 7 SP1

    also try this:
Go to the "Properties" of your external Hard Drive from Device Manager (in Control Panel) and change the removal policy from the default "quick removal" to "better performance".

    Still not seeing it?

    Try this:
Right click on "My Computer" or "Computer" in the start menu or on your desktop.
    Click "Manage"
On the left hand side of the Computer Management Console, click on "Storage" to expand it. Then click on "Disk Management".
Does your external drive appear there?
