Does anybody know of anyone who was actually brought to court for not having a tv license?

Yes. Also, people have gone to jail for refusing to pay the fine.

As long as they don't have your name and you don't answer the door to them, you will be fine.

    regarding the procedure.

they show up to the house. someone foolishly gives their real name and then tells the people they live with that they ****ed up and now everyone has to pay up.

they get the tv license and give the nosy ****er who had to see who knocked a slap.

    or:

the tv license crowd sends out warning letters saying you have to get a tv license now and they send out a few letters.

how long before they take any action?

Happened to us - letter sent out -
then a guy knocked and one housemate opened - said he just moved in and that he didnt know anybodies name - he also gave a fake name -
the inspector told him to pay or go to court -

we didnt pay and just didnt open the door for the next 3 months - we still got letters however just didnt open them
