Seems to be a load of them hassling us recently in Dublin city. Do you walk by or drop a few coins in their cup? I can't remember ever giving change to a homeless person

I am always worried if I got to bend down to drop a few coins in their cup that they will jump up and stab me

Them and Us? if you just thought about it for a second, you would realise that some of Them used to be in whatever privilaged Us crowd you've just imagined. Try a little perspective mate.

Seems like the problem is more to do with your nervous disposition than anything to do with how the beggars behave. Try PI.
