Hi all, i've recently downloaded some software from what now seems to have been a dodgy source and i reckon its corrupted my ex hd and each time i connect it to the comp after a fresh reinstall of the os i've got 100's of disc permissions needing repair in the utilities,

my machine now tells me it will take over 15 mins to transfer a 2 gb file from the "dodgy hd" where the same file copies from my time machine hd in less than 1 min

tearing my hair out here as utilities is verifying all hds for me but yet there is defo something up

any ideas and yes i will be more careful in future with dl's

It's not a virus. Are you sure it's not just a coincidence that you downloaded this file before this happened? The external hard drive is probably failing. But check your USB connection, maybe try a different cable/port.

Did Disk Utility successfully repair all the permissions on the external drive?

du is not giving me an option to verify or repair disc permissions with over 450gb of info on it, the hd is only about a year old and its twin that i bought at the same time is working perfect, it seems to be indexing like crazy right now and i must add that before i reinstalled i had indexing turned off, would that be it?

Yeah, sorry, you can only repair permissions on the startup drive. Why did you say you had loads of permission errors then? Did you mean on the startup drive? That has nothing to do with the external hd.

I'm not really clear on what the problem is. The external hd is slow to transfer files? Is that all? Is that why you did a clean install?

When you say indexing, do you mean Spotlight indexing? If so, you should let it finish. The machine will be slow until it completes. Don't interrupt it.

Try changing your USB port. I discovered one of my external drives was running at USB 1.1 speeds. Changed the port on my Mac Mini and it solved the problem.

@sad professor yes it's spotlight indexing so will leave it be as you said, as regards the permissions I only just reinstalled the flipping os and it's telling me there's hundreds of permissions changed, is that normal?

If you dragged and dropped loads of files from the old install (on the TM drive) over to the new one, then yes, that's obviously going to mess up permissions. You probably should have migrated the files over. But just repair the permissions and it should be okay.

Why did you do a clean install in the first place?

it turns out the hd gots mechanical failures!! i'm currently about 10% the way through retrieving up to 450gb off it with diskwarrior and superduper right now with fingers crossed!! have so much stuff on it and over 5k+ mp3/wavs which i'm hoping aren't corrupted on me!!

i initially reinstalled to build up my digital studio again from the ground up and with that i treated myself and downloaded some audio plug-ins with cracks (not on i know but hey i'm broke and on the dole) and in hindsight it was the hd that was failing but i thought it was the dodgy software! i was convinced the hd was sick with a virus but i now know its mechanical i can only sit and jump up every ten mins or so to check progress

    *bites nails anxiously!!!

But you have everything backed up, yes?

Note: definition of a "backup" is "a copy of a copy". It is not "an external drive containing the only copy".

(Amazes me how many people tell me "yes, I have a backup drive" then go on to say that they deleted the original files so the external drive now holds the only copies!)

ok so late last night when the temp dropped in my studio room I managed to start grabbing files one at a time until before long I was grabbing up to 10 at a time! I grabbed ice from the fridge when the drive heated up again and it worked. the ice in a sealed bag and wrapped in a thin towel kept the drive cool enough to transfer 75% of my precious info back.

    delighted I am

now someone recommend a ssd that won't break the bank?
