I have just sold my house:D ...I wanted to get rid of the couch which is nothing fancy but its in good condition and its clean I put up a pic of it in the local supermarket and said it free to take away anyway I received a phone call from a man who was very suspicious and seemed to think it might be some sort of scam!!

I paid half a months rent for someone who was stuck because I think they are trying the best they can they were gong to sell their play station to pay their rent but the reaction of some people was that I was being soft or being had in some way. I did get some people who did say fair play.

I think cynicism has got to be one of the worst human vices its a kind of denial of the of the goodness of human nature

But to answer you OP, yes you are right imo, most people think everything that could benefit them has a catch!

    Did you get paid back?

One day you're going to get burned doing that and lose over a friend over fights about money
Neither a borrower or lender be, and so on

If you have it to spare and you won't need it back anytime soon, why not give help to someone?

I actually hate people who go on and on about paying them back than the people who don't pay back. If you can't spare it to lend, there is no need to lend it in the first place.

I am not looking for the money back unless he becomes rich in the future... I wouldn't lent money I didn't have I did it to help someone thats all but I found the reaction of some people strange

When institutions of trust within a nation betray that trust in such wicked ways (e.g. Banks, Catholic churches/schools, etc..) you can't blame the majority to become cynical of any gestures of kindness without any catches.

    Cynicism isn't a vice, it's a dysfunction

Why would you voluntarily phone someone who you suspect is scamming?

    Some people are just idiots

    It's half a months rent
He'll spend that on playstation games in the next year alone

It's not like he was destitute and the landlord was about to kick him out

You'd want to be a bit cynical in this day and age, it's a bit like psychological evolution as our previous generation don't seem to have shown this trait as quick as we do.

No, its just everyone used to be so gullible.

I'd see it as just being wary, it's better to err on the side of caution, you get nothing for nothing, the grass is always greener on the other side, are those my feet? and such other clichés

Senses pseudo-altruistic lament cunningly designed to mask boast thread about house sale.
