"The increase in fuel economy during the 1990s is largely due to the rising popularity of Sport utility vehicles (SUV), whose status as light trucks gains them exception from the fuel economy restrictions placed on sedans and other cars."

I was thinkin bout oil n stuff in bed last night after watching some NBC thing... and I worked out something ...more Coz it was sorta funny... anyway the figs are solid.. ya might get a laugh
Im calling this Theory - FACT
    Fat American Car Theory

    And the numbers are easy

USA - 25% of world oil consumption
    4.5% world population

Of that 25% - 71% is just for cars*
= 17.25% of world oil consumption is gulped by ****e american cars!

    So, how ****e are they?

    I checked...

5 of the top 10 cars sold in the US every year since 2000 have been trucks (as they call them)
    •SUVs
    •Pickups
    •Jeeps

    Most sold truck?
-also best selling car on earth!
550,000 sold in US in 2008
    = yes that's 1 per minute every minute24/7/365 at $21,000=*
€11Bn just from one product - impressive.... It's name?

****Ford F-Series**** yee ****in haa !

Mileage- bout 18mpg between city and highway use!
    How crap is that?
    Ford Focus 1.8 - 50 mpg!
    Answer: Very

    The numbers....

World uses 85m barrels a day
    US uses 25% of that
    = 21.25 mbd*
71% is used by their cars
    = bout 15 mbd right?

Ford F series is not a large pickup!
The next best selling was a Silverado which is huuuuugely Mungus - look it up !! Bout 20 feet and 7000 lbs!!
    But a Ford F is 5000 lbs!
    Compared to say, a 3 series Beamer - 2750 lbs !

    So,
Let's call it*3000 lbs for an av*UK car... and let's call it 32 mpg for chucks

    US?

    EPA says*4000 lbs av*car weight ! ! !

33% heavier than our 3000 lb UK car estimate*

This would explain the US Av Car mileage of 23 mpg (when you mix city and highway driving)

Whereas European Av: 30 mpg !!!

So Let's just call it at 33% ****er cars overall

    the relevance ?

    A) we all have similar car needs size, power, space etc (don't gimme they're all fat bastards ****e) whether we're German or US right?

    B) what significance is it that US cars are 33% ****er on av?

    FACT:
    17!!!!! SEVENTEEN ****ING PERCENT
Of world oil consumption every min of every day is used by American cars...
and they just so happen to weigh 33% more and (as you'd expect) NEED 33% more ****in oil !!! then everyone elses ****in cars!!*

IF, they weren't ****e, then, 33% of the 17% they use in their cars would be saved....right?
= 5.7% of world oil consumption every day is JUST BECAUSE Americans have fat ****in holes!!! actually ...just fat cars!

Finally to put their fat holes/cars in perspective:*

Remember : 5.7% of world oil consumption wasted on their extra av 1000 lbs of car (which neatly translates to their 33% less mpg efficiency)

Consider 5.7% of the total world daily consumption of 85 mbd = 7.25 mbd !!!!!

so most recent oil use figs:

    US uses. **21.25 mbd
    China. *******8.2
    Japan. ******4 ish
Then India, Russia, Brazil all at 2 ish
(and we come in at no.63 on 160k bd)

    so... To sum...

The entire nation of Japan (worlds 3rd biggest economy) uses less oil than the pointlessly fat arse of the average American car! : )

This amount of oil usage would easily push the global peak oil date out 5-10 years by any estimate or metric.... and I'm emailing T Boone Pickett tomorrow!! (he's a genius over viewer stats arithmetician peak oil preaching squillionaire with a sense of humour)

    Linear Solution?

    NOT more efficient engines!!!

Just smaller ****in cars... you thick ****s... eat a salad

    F.A.C.T.

It's already very well known that Americans like their gas guzzlers, hardly worthy of a thread?

Im sorry if nothing I said enlightened you at all...
You obviously already knew that more than 5% of daily global oil consumption was specifically used to carry the extra weight specific to American SUV's and that it was the conflict of interests between the SUV makers and the American Big Oil Co's in the early 90's and the actions of their lobby groups which resulted in the classification of these vehicles as 'light trucks' which excused them from the need to be more gas efficient!! as per regulations imposed on all other passenger vehicles in the US! and that this development has resulted in the completely needless waste of oil on such a scale (>5%) as to impact the speed at which the world approaches peak oil?

Yes We are all aware of course of the general issue of America using a disproportionate amount of oil but most people don't have a grasp on the scale and stupidity of the situation and how it arose... in this case because of a Washington sidestep by lobbyists which changed a few words on a bill ! and resulted in the SUV makers being able to avoid expensive new efficient engine models thus being able to flog 4L v12 6500lb SUV's for 25k without their price structures being affected by Eco Regulations! Free Market Economics were driving people towards efficient mid size saloons like Toyotas and this trend would have continued but politics intervened and didn't like the million Japanese cars per year coming in taking sales away from The Big Three US Auto makers! Big Oil stood to lose bigtime as these efficient cars would reduce the growth in demand for oil (which is mandatory in world commerce) so an avenue was found which suited GM and Big Oil... Re-categorise SUV's as light trucks excluding them from the expensive modernisation process and Market big scary SUV's like the Hummer directly against the Pussy ass mid range efficient saloons ... who cares about the weight and resulting mileage!!

But you already knew all this... or you reckon it's not poignant enough... tell me what matters more than our mistakes and solutions as regards our use of oil and our ability to stall peak oil until we figure out an alternative way forward?

And how is posting all this in an Irish forum going to make Americans change their ways?
What's the point of this thread? Maybe you need a blog.

Be like Nutella and this has what exactly to do with science ? ;)

US cars have already targets set for emissions etc
but the old rules on SUV's being trucks circumvents them

cba checking if these have changed in the last few years - can you confirm that you have checked up on this and aren't parroting out of date stuff you saw elsewhere.
( you have posted on a science forum using the word FACT so you have taken the onus upon yourself to confirm the current position :pac: )

actuall if you look into it a little deeper you'll see it's actually the tax breaks people can get on commercial vehicles that makes SUV's more affordable

so the problem is that at least two policies affect the cost of SUV's versus cars , and US subsidies to Detroit are probably part of the equation.

also it's only recently that US regulations have improved the quality of diesel there that's it's suitable for car engines ( low sulphur etc. )

Moving to Policy on sustainability thing

so 5% of the worlds oil production is going on American cars....
    which are big gas guzzlers....

so even if over night they all moved to cars that are 50% more efficient than wht they currently ahve, there useage would drop to 2.5%...

so we save 2.5% of oil production....
what good will it do us??? long term

as far as i can see feck all..... for example if we had globally only 100 years (not an offical figure)of oil left.. we would increase this by only 2.5years...

CO2 emmisions would drop but would make a blind bit of difference to the long term global climate...

    so whats the point???
