Quick question - how can I verify a cars horse power? If someone tells me the car is the 120bhp 1.6l as opposed to the 110 bhp 1.6l, what can I check to verify I'm being told the truth?

Thanks. Where would I look it up? Would I need to call the manufacturer?

Do you have the reg ?

Stick it into www.motortax.ie - if pre 2008 it will put up engine cc...I think it still does for post 2008 even though tax is on an emissions basis.

Google is your friend. Enter car and engine size and "kw" "hp" etc. You will get info very fast if you know how to handle your search engine.

Wikipedia usually prety solid with that too. Just do some reading

I must be crap at google so. I can't find any information. I'm looking for a physical way of checking the hp of a car. To prevent bozo's selling me a 110bhp and telling me it's a 120bhp (for example)

Sorry no reg number at the moment. Ive no Specific car in mind. It's more of a general question to help me while I'm viewing prospective cars.

There are loads of ways. The engine code is printed on the VLC. There is a plate on the car with the code. For some cars the free motorcheck check will tell you HP. There are more subtle things in some cars like different rev counters. Some trims are only available for certain HPs. It's a pretty small consideration really if you do some research when you pick a car you like you'll suss it out.

Or post a link to the car here and we'll see you right!

Not many cars have same model with same engine and hp difference of +/- 10hp. Usually that can happen on facelifting or upgrade/tweak on same models later released cars. So that will be your first place to cheap how much hp it has.

Example: 520i e39. At one stage it was 2.0 and then changed to 2.2 but kept 520i name on it. I know it's cc not hp, but same thing can be done with hp.

If you really doubt and you have trouble finding info on google, then just post it here, lads will be happy to help.

It is not his car so a dyno would be a bit unnecessary:)

I'll just go for a test drive and dyno your car before I buy it. Back in a few hours! Can't see that flying :-)

Well you'll have nothing to worry about in most cases as there will not be variation in bhp in a variant with a particular engine. Many folk won't have a clue what the bhp of their car is though. When the time comes post up the car you are interested in here and someone will help you out I'm sure :)

Im fairly sure anyone with a slight interest in cars will have a good idea of what bhp their car is putting out. Even a lot of women i reckon:cool:

You guys will laugh, and i didnt believe it till I tried it with my own car, but there is an app for the Iphone called Dynolicious. It came out 5BHP more than what I was dyno'd at couture auto..

    Might be worth considering.

I believe it all depends on how many red letters you have on the back of the car, and how often your mudflaps scrape the ground between your house and the church. You multiply this by the "LIFT" factor, this number comes from how many of the ladies football team you can squeeze in the car outside a dishco without one of them gawking bacardi breezer all over you. Multiply this by the diameter of your rims and there you have it..... Lad.
