Air traffic controllers in the US have been advised to take 26-minute naps, after a string of incidents involving workers falling asleep

Gotta say I'm excited about this, being a person who has been doing shift work for years. If they could just extend this idea to other professions, and then export it to Ireland. :)

Imagine John McClane bursting into the Dulles air traffic control and seeing a load of workers having 40 winks!

Or better yet, imagine John McClane bursting into that chruch were the terrorists set up their HQ, and found a load of armed terrorists all a sleep. It'd be a short film but funny nonetheless.

Anyway I can't sat i'm opposed to the idea, I agree with the OP about bringing it into other professions as well. I've worked overnights as well, and it's a real hassle.

Or General Esperanza's emergency landing - "Mayday! Mayday!" and all the lads snoring away.

Actually thats the state of play at the moment. Sometimes a nap is a great boost for the mind. I do it now and again if its a long day. Fifteen-twenty mins and you feel great after. Better than spending the next 4 hours half asleep.

However in this climate of austerity its not the thing to do to say your tired and want a sleep.

    Except where I work :P

Sadly, it seems that it's only a recommendation from the federal organisation charged with implementing transportation safety.
Transport Secretary Ray LaHood has dismissed the proposal for on-the-job naps to be implemented in the aviation industry

The scientific evidence of the benefits of different nap lengths (especially after a night of shortened sleep/a slight deprevation) is accumulating. It helps everything from motor and cognitive functioning to mood and sprint (!) performance! Evidence that a 10 minute nap is better than a 30 minute one is very promising in terms of the practacility of slotting it into the lunchtime hour.

I know employers would feel its a waste of valuable work time but if it increased productivity, and more NB safety, then it should be at least tried!

I love the term Power Nap. It's the use of the word Power that makes it sound like it's an act of doing something, when really it's a perfect example of doing nothing.
