Unemployed students during the summer?

    Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone knows whether a student who is desperately seeking employment during the summer is entitled to go on Jobseeker's while looking? I have been looking for a job since March and have had no luck. Am really up poop creek without a boat and am wondering if there is any help for unemployed students in the summer who are genuinely looking for work.

    xx

Hi OP, I'm in a similar situation. There's not much help really. Students can't claim jobseekers allowance during the summer.

Of course you can claim jobseekers if your unemployed.
If your studies are finished till september and you can show that you are actively looking for work then you can claim jobseekers.

You are not a student in the summer months

Unfortunately students can't claim jobseekers. One of the requirements is that you are available for full time work. Students are not available for full time work as they have to go back to full time education in September.
Until a student either leaves or finishes their course they are categorised as a full time student regardless if its the summer or during the academic year.
Also, to claim jobseekers you need to be registered with FAS. FAS won't register you if you are a full time student.

Thats my plans for the summer gone done the toilet then.
so what are the options for unemployed students

I may not be entitled to jobseekers allowance but what about jobseekers benefit.
you can be sure that if you go to your social welfare office and tell them you have no money, you will get some

You cannot claim Jobseeker's Allowance or Benefit while you are a full-time student.

not saying your wrong or anything but i can't find where it says that. citizensinformation just gives these two bits of info:
To get Jobseeker's Allowance you must:

    Be unemployed
Be over 18 and under 66 years of age
    Be capable of work
Be available for and genuinely seeking work
    Satisfy the means test
    Meet the Habitual Residence Condition
    Students

If you have just left school you cannot get Jobseeker's Allowance. To get Jobseeker's Allowance you must be out of school for three months and you be at least 18 years of age.

Yeah I suppose I can't argue with the facts,
Get a job or live with your parents may be the only options

move to a different country for the summer. If you stay You'll regret the missed opportunity of been able to travel.

If u cant find a job anywhere why not go to your neighbours and surrounding areas paint houses, cut grass, plant flowers shrubs etc etc. Tell them you'll get the stuff yourself get receipt they'll pay you. make it as convenient as possible for them at a cheap price. Think of doing jobs yourself.

If your seeking employment , your jobseeking . So therefor you are entitled to jobseekers :) . Ok so it doesnt work like that but im in the same position as you .
For me college ended last week which led to me having to sign on last week .
I was on Education allowance in college and coming to the end of term I received a letter asking me to go down to social services so I could sign on (it was actually expected for some reason)
So what you should do is go down and let them know you have finished college but you plan to go back because untill you do you are entitled to Jobseekers allowance .
    Hope that helped

    this is incorrect information.

those who are entitled to Back to Education Allowance during the college semesters are elligable to claim job seekers allowance during the summer months.

Those who are NOT entitled to Back to Education Allowance during the college semesters are NOT elligable to claim job seekers allowance during the summer months.

Last summer I went to my Community Welfare Officer and explained that I had no job or money and I was facing homelessness. She told me to apply for the dole for the three months. They will hardly just let you go hungry & homeless??

I didn't in the end as I got a job just as I was about to apply.

who told you that? im just finished first year, not getting btea or a grant yet i was able to sign on yesterday. all you need is a letter from college saying your current year is finished and when your expected to resume.

just wondering was that a level 6 cert course you a during? which progresses to level 7 degree?? because i know that then technically you are finished college and available for work during the summer

people in the social welfare office have info on people who are students. they're not 'clueless'. if it were that easy then everyone would be doing it

i know. as i said, i told them i was only finished first year as did the letter i got from college and was told no problem.

they only know what they're told ;)

i dropped out of college a couple of years ago and went into the dole office to sign on. they said to me that they had it on their system that i was in college and i needed a letter from the college to say ive officially dropped out.
every uni registration office in the country has social welfare signs up saying that u cant sign on.
theres no way around it unless you have a relative who is a swo and is corrupt

    MOD NOTE:

since there is no clear evidence if students can or cannot sign on during the summer, I will delete all posts suggesting that they can, as for now it seems they cannot.

Until someone can prove that students are elligable to sign on during summer months this topic is now closed to prevent people suggesting ways that seem questionable.

If someone can find some legit evidence and send it to me via PM, I will review it and consider re-opening this thread.
