Cyclists..............

Is it just me or do cyclists badly need to do some kind of safety course on rules of the roads? From what i'm seeing lately they seem to have a shocking disregard for other road users and considering they're very vulnerable if they're involved in an accident.

Personally, i'd be far more concerned about the attitude of drivers towards cyclists than vice versa. I just give them lots of room and let them do their thing.

There should be some rule to make them cycle on the footpath when there's no pedestrian traffic tbh, and required to do a course in road safety and obtain a license like drivers.

    They're an absolute nuisance

Thats ok when you have the room but take 2 examples from todays driving. Ballinaboola Traffic Calming near New Ross, Cycle Path provided for cyclists, what do the 2 cyclists in front of me decide to do...yeah..cycle along the National Road network when theres a cycle path the entire way through the village.

Example 2, Ashfield Cross roundabout near Rosslare Strand. Recently completed roundabout on a National Road with Cycle Paths for cyclists. Yeah you guessed it...cyclist today insists on using the carrigeway and then cuts across in front of me with no hand signals etc.

What is the legal situation of a cyclist not using a provided cycle path. Must the cyclist use the provided path or can they stay on the carriageway?

    Todays Rant over:rolleyes:

    Cheers

i commute by bike, and i like to think im relatively safe. i think a big part of the problem (maybe not so much with respect to obeying lights etc, but more so people doing stupid unsafe things) is the dublin bike scheme.

now dont get me wrong, its a great scheme that has worked exceptionally well, but it means that lots of people who wouldnt normally be cycling in town and dont have the experience to do so safely find themselves on a bike on busy city centre roads.

just realised OP didnt mention anything about being in dublin or otherwise, but this is my experience anyway

I treat bikes in much the same way as I treat kids (and, for that matter, all other road users)- liable to go out in front of me at any second. I give them room, pass when it's safe, and get on with my life. I really don't get the sense of entitlement that some motorists have to public roads - cyclists, horses, and other assorted slow-moving vehicles all have just as much of a right to use them as we motorists.

Are you for real? Motorists are the problem not cyclists. How many bad drivers are there on the road? What annoys you? The fact that you have to drive slowly and with due care behind a cyclist.? Cyclists have as much right on the road as motorists. The cyclists on boards are going to love this post. Pathetic.

Hi vis vests with each having a unique ID/reg number. Maybe with some accountability we might have responsibility.

Both are as bad as each other. Cyclist stand more chance of getting killed though. Motorist have more chance of killing someone....

Just like some people who drive cars are idiots some people who cycle bikes are idiots, unfortunately its a part of life and they have to be put up with.

What a ridiculous statement. Not all cyclists travel at 5km/h, and people would still walk out onto streets.

I could go on. But i think with even the slightest bit of thought you'd see how crazy a thought that was.

Cyclists are vulnerable, just give them space and let them off. There's no use in getting into a rage over what they do it's simply not worth the stress.

I cycle more than I drive these days, and I have to say, I have very little problem with any motorists on my commute into Dublin city centre everyday. I'm courteous to drivers when I can be, and most drivers return the favour. If people would just chill in general everything would be much more pleasant!

If every adult cyclist in Ireland decided to go to work or college tomorrow in cars, I'd be reading another thread here raging about the traffic.

I look at a cyclist as one less car adding to the traffic

So no, they shouldn't be relegated to footpaths and many are commuting at a pretty quick pace.
Never mind that hopping up and down on footpaths can damage the wheels on a racing bike

This thread has been done a lot before. And it tends to go around in circles with people getting banned etc. I'm debating whether to close it or not tbh...

It's been said before and I'll say it again

    There are arsehole cyclists
    There are arsehole pedestrians
    There are arsehole motorists
    There are arsehole bikers
    There are arsehole taxi drivers
    There are arsehole bus drivers
    There are arsehole farmers
    There are arsehole truck drivers
    There are arsehole rollerbladers

and so on. But no need to tar everyone just cos of the minority
