Think my fan's gone...

I've a HP G61, less than a year, and having awful problems with it at the moment. It's been really slow lately and I think it's the fan because I haven't heard it whirring in a while and I've noticed it gets very hot, then today it overheated and hibernated. I need to sort this out, my finals start next week :( I'm in Galway and will probably bring it to Laptek, has anyone had this experience or know if it's going to be a big job? I don't have the time for it to be sent away to be fixed!!

If it's less than a year i would take it back to where you bought it.

It happened mine before, very simple job, somehow the fan intake sucked in enough dust/fluff (?) to stop it from running. Once the casing was removed fan was cleaned and off it went

That would actually make sense as I've been around a lot of dust lately, could I do that myself?

You could try a can of compressed air (yes you can buy air in a can).

Failing that if you have any DIY skills you could try it, the service manual can be seen here:

It seems to over complicate everything but you should get access to the fans easily enough.

Ideally remove cover (mind the small screws!!), don't like the idea of blowing the dust into the laptop, preferable to remove it if possible?

Hi guys, thanks for your help.
Well, I tried doing it myself but found it difficult to remove so rather than risk breaking it (as only I would) I brought it to Lapteck and the guy tells me the fan is not clogged but just dead. So I can either get him to order and fit a new one costing me around €70 or I can send it off as it'ss still under warranty for another month. That will mean doing without it for a few weeks during my exams though and having to make sure everything is backed up... Sickened face.

Sounds like a rock and a hard place - without adding to your woes it occurs to me if the work is as crucial as you imply, maybe it should be backed up anyway - it isn't unknown for a hard disk to give up the ghost - best of luck with it whatever you decide,70e sounds a bit steep!
