Hi all just looking for opinions on transfering from my old mac book pro to my shint new one that is waiting at home for me :D

i'v read the apple site and a few other sites guides now the apple site makes it all look so easy and imo the one with least hassle is from time machine

just wondering if anybody has any experience in doing this and can give me an estimate on time, i have about 160gb full on the drive and wondering if this will take long ? its mostly music, a few versions of football manager and installed programs all my videos etc are on a external hd would it be just as easy to transfer and install programs manually and start afresh ?

    thanks

I work in the trade and I can assure you there is no better way to transfer data than manually, I have used many times the file transfer method on startup and the time machine restore and I have found it can slow your machine down by up to 30%, can cause all sorts of quirkyness and can break your heart. These things are meant to work and can work well if and only if. the machines are of similar spec. the OS's are the same. and your machine you are migrating from is an intel and you had no prior machine to that. Also you have not installed any OS modifying applications. e.g NTFS 3G drivers.

Said that migration works for thousands of people and they have no perceived issues, but I have migrated the simplest of clients and advised against it, and clients who have bought multiple machines some migrated others not have always wiped the migrated ones clean afterwards because the performance of the clean machine was that much better.
