Health Minister Dr James Reilly has said he intends to accept the resignations of 11 members of the Health Service Executive (HSE) board tendered at a meeting this lunchtime.

Minister Reilly also announced plans to legally abolish the board structure by the end of the year.

No severance package will be given to those resigning from the board.

In a statement the health minister said an interim board will be put in place which will involve senior figures from the Department of Health and from the executive of the HSE.

Frank Dolphin, the outgoing chairman of the board, has accepted the minister’s request to remain as Chairman of the new interim board.

Minister Reilly said it was his intention that the new board would allow for “greater integration and less duplication in the delivery of health care services to patients”.

"There is a pressing need to reform services to the benefit of patients and those people in need of the services," he added.

"The Programme for Government sets out a clear vision for the future of the health services which includes changes to the HSE and greater responsibilities for the Minister for Health and the Department of Health.

"Today’s announcement is a step in the advancement of that programme."

The makeup of the new board will be announced in the coming weeks.

Minister Reilly thanked the current board members for their service and for paving the way for intended reform.

So its being reported in that story that there will be no severance packages. I find this a bit incredulous I must say.

What do we think people ?
Is this the start of real change or is it simply window dressing ?

Window dressing until proven otherwise. However, I have to say that I still find these 'resignations' quite satisfying. Just please, please don't simply replace them with 10 new civil servants/businessmen/political cronies on the same pay!

It's some marker, I doubt that the minister will find out about reports through the media as happened recently.

I don't trust the Minister and I think this is optics. It will be interesting to see how he deals with his buddies in Killarney today.
