    Hi all,

I know this has probably been answered already but couldnt find exactly what i was looking for.

Have loved aviation for a long time and am contemplating going for lessons.

How much would it cost to get the PPL so that i can fly on my own and what all does it entail

I could make a smart comment about not looking hard enough if you couldn't find what you were looking for, but I won't ;)

PPL for an aeroplane requires minimum 45 hours, including 10 solo and passing 4 written exams.

There's more information for you to read here http://www.iaa.ie/index.jsp?p=143&n=196 and no doubt each club/fto will have more info.

Here in Ireland expect to pay from about €12g, it will work out cheaper in the states though.

And first things first, get a medical - only a class 2 is required for PPL but no medical, no flying.

And go for it, it's one of the best things you can do!

One option is a PLL(M). A minimum of 30 hours and expect to pay about 130 per lesson.

Irish aero sports in kilkenny springs to mind, i think there is one in abbeyleix aswell but the name escapes me.

Both operate the samba xxl aircraft like this one:

ok, what is a PLL(m) and how does it differ from the PPL?

It is a ppl for microlights. Maybe some more knowledgeable people here could tell you the exact differences.

The likes of sambas perform just aswell if not better than many other aircraft you need a normal PPL to fly. Plus afterwards the costs of running a microlight are much lower than a cessena for instance.

If its flying as hobby your looking for it is something you should consider. I am myself at the moment esp with the way fuel prices are going.

How much cheaper would it be to do it in the states?
Like if you consider flights over/accom/living costs included?
How quick can it be done over there?

just wanna double check. There are 2 different versions of the PPL available, one for microlight including the likes of the SambaXXL or the Skyranger and then there is the full PPL for planes like cessna's?

does anyone know if the flight schools around dublin/weston cater for microlight? I'm starting to think that may be the better way in.

Depending on the weather it can be done in 3/4 weeks all in for about 6/8k.

Thats my understanding of it. If you head over to the flying in ireland forum and ask they can give you the full info on it. Im no expert on it. The lads over there will go through the pros and cons of each licence.
