    hi

Can anyone point me towards which hd to buy, he has a 160g at the mo. can i get a bigger one for it?
is there a certain type/brand i should get? seem to be loads of different types i cant tell the difference.
    thank you

Any - it really makes little or no difference.

As long as you get a standard 2.5 inch SATA drive, suitable for a laptop, you'll be fine. Any capacity is fine, and will work after install & format.

I think the cheapest these days are the 160GB/5400RPM and they run around €55 on places like Komplett, up to a 500GB/7200 for €63. There are 1TB drives available.

If you have a bigger budget, you can get a bigger or a faster one, but I personally wouldn't bother - I never filled my 60GB one with games! Though, I never copied music or movies to it, so if he does that, you may need a larger size if that's needed.

In terms of speed, the standard PS3 uses a 5400 RPM drive, and that;'s fine. You can get faster ones, like 7200RPM, and games may load slightly quicker, but it will be hardly noticeable.

If you've got cash to burn, you could also go to an SSD drive, in the 2.5 inch size, as these are MUCH faster, and this can affect load speeds of games like GT5 considerably.

I would recommend a momentus XT, I have one in my PC and its a beast of a thing, windows boots in under 10 seconds, and it cuts down loading times in games by a large margin. Its a hybrid SSD/HDD, its got 4gb of flash memory that it uses to buffer frequently used files.

The only downside is its max size is 500gb and its a bit more expensive that a normal 2.5" of this size. On the other hand its much cheaper than an equivalent sized SSD (if they can even be found) and doesn't suffer from the peculiar fragmentation and life span problems SSDs can have.

The hard drive is secured by 1 small screw, it is easily rounded, be careful

has to be 2.5mm drive... just make sure it's 9.5mm high and not 12mm....

your also probably better off just getting a 5400rpm rather than a 7200rpm - the only difference you'll notice is that the load times of game will be marginally faster but nothing worth taking about...

after that it's up to you as too how much memory you want..
