Ipod touch sound balance problem

I have my ipod touch about 9 months now and just recently there's been a sound balance problem when using earphones. The sound is shallow and/or non existent in one of the earphones but the sound is fine when i play the sound without headphones or in a ipod dock. The earphones are not the problem as i've tried numerous sets which work in my laptop and my old nano

Any ideas on how to fix it rather than all the annoyance of going back to the shop?

    Thanks

Sounds like the head phone connection is damaged on the ipod, so one side, L or R, sounds poor but the speaker is fine as it bypasses this
