Hey there, just wondering if i could get some advise from ye with regards the old shape Vw Transporters.
I was thinking of buying a van for carrying tools, I would like to buy a Vw Transporter but i have a friend with an 06 174bhp version that is giving alot of trouble with regards the clutch and electrics. He traded in a 03 2.5lt 5cylinder for the new van and he says it was pretty much bulletproof with just a few minor problems.
My question is what are the 02-03 2.5litre, 5 cylinder transporters like for reliability?

I had the earlier 1999 2.4lt diesel. Ran it to 360,000 miles. One clutch (expensive) plenty of front brake discs (inferior quality) and a few timing belts and water pumps, oh and 2 sets of bottom ball joints and some heater plugs.

The only non service type faults were a t-piece on the expansion bottle and a bush in the gear change mechanism. Both parts were under a fiver and both, oddly enough, went on the fridays of bank holiday weekends. It's still on the road somewhere in the West.

Have to say the most reliable motor i've ever owned
