    Hi guys,

I'm tempted to get an Octavia RS TDI and was wondering what people's opinion of them are and if I'm looking to buy one what sort of issues should I watch out for?

    Thanks.

Really like them myself. Mate has the VRS TDI estate as he has a young family and its got a bit of poke at the same time.

Some like them, some hate them.

    As for the booty.

    Pros Vs Cons

Pro's = Nice car to drive...Bit of Poke..Economical enough...I love my one

    Con's =
I can only think of 3.

    a) Can have DPF issues if driven around town a lot,They need to be driven in a manner they were built for. ( obviously I dont have any DPF issues ):D

    b) DMF.. No idea as to if and when this could give grief.

    c) This is the big one.
NEVER come on Boards and praise it..You WILL get insulted and slated :P

    On a serious note though.

Go and drive one. it will be your only way of knowing.;)

DPF issues are more common on the PD engine <08
Than on the CR engine 08>

DMF on pre 08 b? Yes

To be fair, this isn't an Octavia exclusive issue. These things seem to be the bain of all modern diesels.

If you're doing more town driving, why not consider the petrol vRS?

    Hi guys,

I'm tempted to get an Octavia RS TDI and was wondering what people's opinion of them are and if I'm looking to buy one what sort of issues should I watch out for?

    Thanks.

Firstly you'll get slated for buying one. Some people seem to have a major problem with them for some reason.

If you're going for a diesel one get the new common rail engine. It's supposedly more relaible than the older PD engine. It's also quieter and has a more linear power delivery. That engine was available from mid-08 onwards and has a CEGA engine code.

When they facelifted the normal Octavia in late 2008/early 2009 the vRS continued on unchanged externally but received all interior modifications. It also had bluetooth as standard and all of these are common rail. This is the one I have.

I originally had a Golf GTi bought but had to back out as my commute changed. I do about 1200-1500 km a week in mine and it returns about 42-44 mpg. This consists of town driving and motorway driving (c140kph) so not the most economical situations. I did Dingle to Cork Monday evening and averaged 52 mpg for that trip with 4 people on board and a boot full of luggage. These figures are calculated the old fashioned way too and not on the trip computer.

It's a comfortable car, smooth enough on the bumps (mines on 18's) and has a decent amount of useable power. In the sea of 1.4 petrols and 1.6 diesels it will comfortably pull away. I'll probably be accused of being a fan boy for saying that though.

The spec is quite decent - dual zone climate control, cruise, MFD, auto lights/wipers, dimming mirror, drivers arm rest, 2 cool boxes. I have added the Columbus Sat Nav to mine which if you can pick one up for the right price is worth every penny. Also try and find one with Xenon lights as they are excellent. Very rare in this country though. Decent tyres are a must, there's a fair bit of torque going through the front wheels and it can spin them easily in the wet. Also, they like a drop of oil so keep a litre in the boot.

It wasnt my ideal choice of car in the beginning but it's turning out to be a great work horse. The space is useful and the engine seems to be getting better as the miles pile up. For the money, you can't really go too wrong tbh.

Nope, it's not better than the petrol, but it's decent enough none the less. But I prefer petrol anyway.

You're considering one of them over a petrol vRS Octavia?

Petrols a gem as 4 cylinders go. Compared to the cost of a GTi it's a bargain too. There was one for sale for 6k not so long ago. I know it's uglier and not as sharp to drive but for the saving id take it.

My quote was only €100 more than the 1.6 Leon I had before it. They aren't that bad insurance wise.
