Tax system to change?

    Hi

Not sure if there has been a thread about this, just had a discussion with a few people in car trade(sellers and mechanic's) at the weekend about the current tax system. Just to put a point in case, I have 07 Mondeo 1.8TDCI, brother recently got 08 one and his tax is 300 or so and mine is above 500. Only difference is a few months in the date of car bought.

Anyway to get back onto my point. From everyone I have talked to they are saying the current tax system based on how green your engine is will soon be scrapped and we will go back to something similar we had before 08. Reason's they said to me where first, it was the greens who brought it in and the whole car trade system was in up roar and wanted it back out. Second the government is losing a fortune. When you think about it in my office there is 5 series in car park and I think they are paying only 150-300 euro in tax.

Has anyone any thought? do you think it will happen? the government need a much money as possible and one of the old favorites is to hit the car market. With the price of petrol/diesel they cannot really hit that anymore(I was paying less than a euro a ltr last week in SA) I think they will go after the tax again!!!

All the tax bands are going up €50/€100 apparently, longterm I reckon they will revert back to a cc system or perhaps a bhp system although since the bhp isn't on the VRC it's probably a non runner.

The emissions system is a looney idea and always was, having cars bought for €50,000+ with annual motor tax of <€150 is laughable while folks with modest old cars that are still quite green (anything with a CAT) paying €400 to €600.

I do think that the Green Party are the biggest pack of clowns ever, their policies are often indefensible from any angle.

I can't see it going back to engine size or power output. CO2 is the trendy method so they will just screw people more rather than change the structure. The increase in fuel prices is helping boost revenues anyhow.

The current system manages to be both idiotic, unfair and poor at raising tax revenue, generally with taxes we manage one or the other but rarely all three...

I suspect they will change it, whatever change they make will increase the amount everyone is paying however.
