Alright so going to Thailand for 2 months in June, just making sure I don't forget to do anything before I go. All I can think of is get the injections and contact the Thai embassy to get a visa/stamp...

Think that's all I need to do before I go?

You get 1 month Visa on arrival by airport so no need to apply at an embassy - a lot of people go without injection, they're bout 150 and get them 1 month beofre you go!

But hes going for 2 months so will need to apply for visa.

Do a border run after the first visa, get to see another country as well.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 182 ✭✭whatsyourquota

But you mightnt even be let in with the flight showing you arent departing untill 2months later, you never know what sort of immigration officer you will get.
Also if you do a border run you will have to fly back in to get another 30 days as 15 day visas are given out when you cross by land so that would just cancel out the cost of the visa

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 764 ✭✭✭beagle001

Border runs give you 30 days for your first one after that they give you 14 days supposedly but I have only encountered this once in Nong kai when the chief immigration officer was conducting an inspection of his troops, went back the next month and they stamped me 30 days.
Like a lot of things in Thailand if you conduct yourself well with the officials you won`t have a problem.

When were you last in Thailand? Rule changed about year and a half or 2 years ago. All land crossing only give 15 days.
Il be getting a double entry visa myself for this summer, keeps my mind at rest anyway

I am in a similar situation. Will only be in Thailand for a 1 week before heading to Laos and beyond. Spend a week in Thailand at the end.

However as my flight on entry shows 40 days between entry and exiting Bangkok I will need a Visa. Question is do I need a single or double entry.

Can I get away with a single entry Visa which would allow me enter Thailand initially then when coming in from Cambodia just enter under a 15 day tourist Visa at the land border.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 182 ✭✭whatsyourquota

Well if the from the time you cross the border from cambodia to Bangkok is less than 15 days then just get a single entry visa.
Its awfully annoying that the only give 15 days at land borders now and its especially annoying that the flights from Cambodia are so expensive because otherwise you would get a 30 day at the airport.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 182 ✭✭whatsyourquota

Or another thing which iv been considering is just looking up air asia and you get flights for half the price of a visa and just buy one of those to show a flight out of thailand within 30 days incase you get asked. Im sure this would work

How much is the two month visa nowadays? I'd say it'd be easier to get that and just relax.

So, visa, injections, do you need malaria tablets? (presume not)
Other than that speedos and suncream.

Hey, just might have to jump on this thread to ask a question, I am arriving into Singapore by flight, then heading to Malaysia, then Thailand and then onto Cambodia. How long do I have in Thailand? Can you get a 30 day visa by land?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 182 ✭✭whatsyourquota

Visa is 40 euro. Was free up untill March I wish they would bring that back.

And no you wont get a 30 day visa crossing from Malaysia to Thailand by land as I said all land borders are 15 days. so get a visa or just hop on a cheap Air Asia flight into Thailand and you will get your 30 days

Well I'm planning on going up to Laos within the first 10 days or so of arriving in Thailand and then back into Thailand after a few days there. Will I have to pay for a new Visa when I go back into Thailand, even if I have a 2 month one from the Thai embassy here?

Want to go to Vietnam too but not sure when I'll get there during the two months.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 182 ✭✭whatsyourquota

You would have to get a double entry tourist visa if thats the case

    Hey..

I fly to Bangkok on 30th June and my flight out of Asia is from Singapore on 30th Sept.

I havent booked any flights around Asia yet so would I be better to pre-book a train out of Thailand to Cambodia/Laos as proof of exit.

Plan is to spend 4 weeks in Thailand and then travel on to Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.

    Cheers

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 182 ✭✭whatsyourquota

I think I remember reading somewhere but not too sure, that only flights are allowed as proof of exit. The train doesnt go into Cambodia anyway and I think it stops on the border of Laos but it might go into Laos now because I know they were upgrading that.
Just book an air asia flight somewhere should cost about 20 euro

Ok I am not really sure I understand what I need regarding Visas.

Going to SE Asia for 36 days. Flying into and out of Bangkok, no other plans yet but hoping to go to Vietnam maybe.

Do I need to apply for something before leaving? How? Where - Ireland, airport or arrival in Thailand??? How much?

Going in 10weeks, bit nervous about this part, would really appreciate your help.
    Thank You :)

Similar boat as yourself - see my earlier post above as I'm travelling for 40days in SE Asia and flying in and out of Bangkok

I will either get a single entry visa from the Thai Consulate in Dublin http://www.thaiconsulateireland.com/visaguidelines.htm

So that route is €40 which gives me 60days - even though I use about 1 week of that . Travel around Vietnam etc so I end up coming back through the Thai - Cambodian boarder where I will get a normal 15 days tourist Visa. So I just need to make sure my flight is within that 15 days period.

Alternatively I see I could get a AirAisa flight for about €47 euro which would enable me to enter Thailand under the normal tourist exemption 30day visa (as I have proof of leaving the country within that 30 days). And again come in through Cambodia under the tourist visa exemption.

Other that that the only other thing I am doing at the moment is
    Vaccinations - expensive business !!
Will send off for the Vietnam visa next week. There are two ways of getting a Vietnam Visa
    1) if you are going entering Vietnam through an airport then you can get the Visa there and then at the Airport. This is known as Visa on Arrival (sometimes incorrectly called an eVisa). You still need however to pre-arrange a Visa Approval Letter through various tourist websites that essentially lets you on the Aircraft you are boarding.

2)As I don't know yet if I end up flying into Vietnam or go overland from Laos I am going with the Visa sorted before I go.
    http://www.vietnamembassy.org.uk/

P.M. me if you need to know more about this option as I e-mailed the Embassy in London and got a good mail back form them. But basically is cost £44 for a 30 day single entry visa plus P&P. Prices vary depending then if you need longer (90 days) or multiple entries.

You can get Air Asia flights for way less than 47 euro and definately less than a visa.
Have decided myself on this option instead of the visa just incase i get asked at the airport.
Have found Bangkok to Ho chi minh for 29 euro so thats 11 euro less than the visa and dont forget the cost of the two registered envelopes but i think I can get a flight for even less than that.
Its a pity they wont just believe you when you say you are going overland especially since if you do overstay it just means more money for them.

Just from what I remember when we were there (check if things have changed though), if you need a visa for Vietnam, better to get it in Bangkok (think Laos would be tricky), and it might take a few days, so you could apply for it as soon as you are settled in Bangkok(assuming you are flying in there?!) As soon as it is issued it starts 'ticking' and ours was only valid for 30 days, which means if you travel north in Thailand and then through Laos, by the time you get to Vietnam, you may only have a couple of weeks left on the visa!

Also, be aware of the 'scam system' when travelling through borders; you may have to pay some sort of (illegal, but unavoidable) extra 'fee' , to speed things up. It is only a small amount of money ($1 ish) and a pain to have to pay; so frustrating as it is just the border staff 'trying it on', but there seems to be no way out. Especially in Vietnam with a very small grasp of the lingo and guards with guns standing there, just don't even argue. (Us backpackers on our bus kicked up a bit about paying and next thing we knew, the bus was being stripped, even the floorboards were being lifted up to 'find' something contraband, and the driver had to pay them off with cigarettes. It's a mad old world!)

Thailand, Laos and Vietnam and the people, food etc there are totally amazing countries though and you will have a great time. We didn't have any real problems and if you are savvy you will be ok too. Don't forget anti malarials if you are going off the beaten track too. Thailand has everything you could possible need while over there, so stock up on essentials before entering the other countries.

Ps. Cambodia is great too, Angkor Wat is a must, if you can fit it in!

    Happy travelling!

I got my Vietnam visa in Vang Vieng it was 55 dollars and took one day.
So theres no problem getting it there just incase you decide to go to Vietnam at the last minute.
Also I hear the bus journey from Laos to Vietnam is supposed to be the worst thing in the world so I flew at the last minute, think I booked it 4 days before and cost me 50 dollars to fly from Laos to vietnam.
So if your like me and change your mind every second dont be too worried!

    Thanks whatsyourquota!

So there you go! I said to check to see if things had changed since we were there and they have, ref visa in VV. ALWAYS worth getting the up to date info, regardless of what you read or are told (hence I mentioned to check!)

The bus journey is sounding the same though; I class it as one of our all time worst journeys ever, certainly about 2 or 3 on the list! It was hideous!!!! Anyone else to update on that one, or is it still gruesome?!! haha!

Your bang on there !! I can get in this in July for €31 euro, that is not only cheaper but also less hassle posting off passports etc.

Regards the other suggestions getting visas while over there its fine if you have the time but the original OP is on 30 days and I'm on a 40 day trip. I know for me I cannot afford to waste any time at all in trying to cover what I want to do in the time available and spend time waiting for visa where possible.

Interesting comments on the bus from Laos to Vietnam, it just does provide flexibility in that I don't think I have even the option or time to booking 4 days in advance. I read somewhere that the seanery was quite good though if you rough it !!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 182 ✭✭whatsyourquota

you have to remember the bus takes 24 hours compared to the one hour flight!
Surely you will realise a few days beforehand that you want to go? the bus usually takes about 2 days notice anyway! Like lets say your in Laos and maybe in Luang prabang or vang vieng you could easily book your flights in these places and it will be a few days by the time you get to Vientiene anyway

and the thing is with the visas you wont be waiting around. As I said mine took one day, I was going to spend that one day in Vang Vieng anyway and I imagine you wont be moving place to place everyday?
