Hi, I work for an Irish company and pay Irish tax and Im renting an apartment in Italy. Could somebody tell me if I can claim back tax on the rent being paid abroad and if so what steps would I need to take and how far back could I claim. Any information would be appreciated.

"Irish Income Tax" which is the most authoritative reference book on the subject says, at page 398, that Revenue accept that the property may be outside the State.

My non-statutory Consolidated Taxes Acts notes that there is a Revenue precedent stating this. I can't find the precedent - you are welcome to look for yourself: http://www.revenue.ie/en/about/foi/precedents/index.html

So I reckon you can claim, and you can go back to 2007 under the normal four year rule.

Do you own a home in Ireland on which you are getting TRS on Mortgage Interest then you cannot claim the rent tax credit.

Hi Everyone and Thanks for the info, I do not own any property and the apartment I rent in Italy from an Italian landlord is my only property expense. Can anyone advise of the next step to claim back the tax, does it matter that its an Italian property from an Italian Landlord. ??
