Generally i go abroad to relax and chill out, whatever tan i get im happy with, as i wont lie out in sun i go for long walks and swim loads so always get a bit of a tan .
At the end of my two weeks in spain last year , i had a little bit of a tan and was happy enough as generally i dont trust low factor suncream and just stick with 15+ .
I was swimming at the pool when a english woman looks at me and asks "oh how long have you been here"
    i reply "two weeks"
she says "oh you have no tan"

I looked at her and she was red all over , i ask "how long have you been here"
2 days was the reply and she said" i have a better tan than you already"

In my head i thought dark red is not a tan and its incredibly silly to go purposly get burnt so it will brown afterwards.

It amazes me that some people dont realise the real harm and damage they are doing to their skin .

That's because people are stupid. Let her off. When her skin is like leather in 5 years, then that's her problem!

I come across this all the time! I don't sunbath at all anymore and normally take a can of spray tan away on hols with me just to take away the pasty look. I'm constantly telling my friends about the dangers and the aging effects it will have on their skin....but they never listen.

It's just not worth burning your skin for two weeks that's going to leave years of damage. That girl/woman that you met OP sounds like a right twat! Also parents that don't put suncream on their kids because "they will get a nice colour" need a reality check!!!

Damage to the skin by the sun is permanent. It also builds up - that means damage to the skin in one year is added to damage done in previous years. In later life this can lead to skin cancer.

Skin cancer can take 20 to 30 years to develop, so the rates of skin cancer today reflect the trends of the 70’s and 80’s.

In Ireland, one in every eight men and one in every ten women will develop skin cancer by the age of 74 years

The number of skin cancer cases is rising every year
    .
Ireland has among the highest skin cancer rates in Europe.

Two-thirds of Irish people have a higher risk of developing Skin Cancer because of their skin type.

Some people like the one OP mentioned really need to wise up.
