Got my insurance with Quinn and they wanted the NCT certificate before they'd proceed with the policy.

You can, but I wouldn't involve myself in any accident were I you. If it's not in the small print that your car is roadworthy then it's still a great excuse to avoid paying out. The gardai might take an interest in that whilst they're talking to you, too.

EDIT: I didn't need to provide a cert., but it's in the documentation that they expect me to have one.

Depends on insurance company, some will if its only out of NCT by a few months. My new car was out by 10 months, told that was too long and would need to tow to NCT center. (than needed to fax cert to drive car home:rolleyes:)

the answer is probably the same as "can you insure your house for 4m? if its only worth 200,000?" you probably can but it wont be worth shit when they go and check the value of your claim

Andrew - if you book your NCT they will send you out a letter to state just that. The insurance company will insure you if you send a copy of the letter to them

No it's not, we don't want after hours being inundated with shíte that belongs in another forum just because you're too lazy or too impatient. Ask in the proper forum.
