    It's on UPC, not Sky.

All my series links for BBC stopped working, would this be the cause?

Also MGM HD is after Film4 +1

Why oh why have UPC named this channel "BBC1 HD" when it clearly is "BBC One HD"

Logo in top left corner clearly states "BBC One HD"

    Schedule on BBC website...

Lack of attention to detail. There are mistakes like that all over the guide.

    Channel 135 is BBC HD
Channel 140 is BBC One HD

    Two different channels.......

You're right. My point is is the EPG is BBC1 HD, when it should be BBC One HD on channel 140

Please UPC can u change it, pretty please, before it officially launches, no sign of it on www.upc.ie

Why is that so important? Does it effect recording programs or something?

It's just the wrong spelling and a basic mistake. Similar to calling ITV 1 this: ITV One.

RTE Two on satellite is listed as RTE TWO, which is incorrect also. UPC have far to many mistakes and inconsistencies for me to bother listing.

Most people won't notice or care though.

Am I the only one not overly impressed with the quality of BBC One HD? I spent some time flicking between the SD version and the HD version last night, as well as switching the box between 720p and 1080i output, and there doesn't seem to be as big a difference in quality (to my eyes, anyway) between BBC One SD and BBC One HD as there is compared to some of the other HD channels.

For example, I find the likes of ESPN HD, Discovery HD and National Geographic HD look considerably better than their SD versions. However, with the likes of Setanta HD and, now, BBC One HD there only seems to be a very, very slight improvement in picture quality, so slight it's often hard to notice any difference at all. Is it because UPC is allocating less bandwidth or something like that to these channels than some of the others? Or is it that to other people it looks a lot better and it's just my eyes playing tricks on me? ;):D I'd be interested in hearing everybody elses' opinions on this and whether you've noticed a bigger difference in picture quality on BBC One HD than I have.

I'm not complaining (much! :D), it's great to finally have BBC One HD as part of the channel line-up, it's just that I'm a little underwhelmed by the quality of the picture compared to some of the other HD channels, that's all.

Nice one probably wouldn't have noticed for ages if I haven't seen it here!

It's the very same on satellite. The picture quality is quite poor there aswell. Think of the bright side though, you are no longer a slave to the BBC Northern Ireland schedules

I think there is a huge difference between BBC One SD and HD on satellite. Not all shows are HD, so obviously these will not look as good. I will admit its not the best HD channel on sat, but it is pretty good.

Maybe UPC are over compressing it? Maybe they are sourcing from satellite and re-encoding it (hopefully not!!).

There seem to have been constant complaints on UK sat forums about the quality of BBC HD and BBC One HD. Low bitrates etc.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,818 ✭✭✭Minstrel27

Funnily enough today BBC HD has a near static caption which to me suggests that the complaints are warranted. At a guess I would say that the BBC has turned off the BBC HD Preview so BBC One HD can have a higher bit rate for the royal wedding.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,003 ✭✭✭JDxtra

Didn't notice that, but would make sense. BBC One HD was excellent quality earlier.

Ah, so it's not just my eyes playing tricks on me then thankfully! Funnily enough, I find BBC HD looks great on UPC, it's just BBC One HD that's underwhelmed me so far.

Just to check the differences in quality levels, I compared 'Eastenders' (a programme which I presume is now filmed in HD) on BBC One SD, BBC One HD and the BBC HD channel last night and I found that there was a significant difference in quality on the BBC HD channel, whereas there was only a very, very slight difference on BBC One HD compared to the SD version. Well, that's what it looked like to my eyes anyway. So I guess you guys are onto something regarding BBC One HD having a much lower bitrate than the dedicated BBC HD channel.

UPC for once are not the cause of the problem, I am a member of digitalspy and we have been on about the lack of quality for ages. BBC changed codecs last year, they seem to think that you can get a high quality output with less bandwith...so far they have failed miserably. BBC HD is not even close to Discovery etc in terms of quality.

Why is this? is BBC one HD schedule different from BBc one.

Can we get BBC one HD for different region anyway on UPC? I know on Sky you can.

    not for HD?
Edit: What I meant to say is that there are no regions in HD, only the network (London?)

BBC One HD has a schedule that closest resembles BBC One in England (local news etc. not shown)

There are no regional versions of BBC One HD anywhere. Everyone gets the same channel.

Those empty local slots should be filled something better than random audio sounds and an Info card.

Yeah, pity it's not BBC London and then I'd never have too see BBC NI ever again

Do you need to be signed up for a certain package or be in a specific area to get BBC1 HD? Because I'm not seeing it on my lineup at the moment.
