anyone ever spray silage ground with round up before cutting it.

want to put in kale the 1st of june in a silage field, but the silage wont be cut till last week in may, and there wont be enough time to let it green up again and spray.
was planning on spraying it 10 days before cutting then mow and then pit it along with rest of silage

    any experience or advise welcomed

Anyone top silage ground prior to close up? Grazing it at present but that doesn't get it really cleaned down.

Sorry to HijackThread, but as you are talking about this you might know the answer to my question.
What do ye use to wash out your sprayer with after roundup to ensure there is no residue left the next time you go spraying.
Is there a cleaning detergent you can add in or do you just add water?

If I need to put it on a separate thread, Mod just let me know.
    Thanks

ya done this last year done about 4 acres in autumn, worked ok but only a maintainence feed after for drys, wouldnt really fancy doing alot of the silage ground unless you want a pit just for dry cows.

@sea12: we use all clear extra, its amonia based as far as i know, but there are detergents going too i think

depends on how well and what the next use is. I changed from Glyphosate to beet spray there a few weeks ago. Beet is very sensitive and it has to be done 100% or you may be down a field of beet. Use a product called All-Clear think its made by DuPont. Either this will be available at your spray stockists or an equivalent. It kinda looks like washing up liquid. procedure takes about 2 hrs done properly, but this would be an extreme case for beet

For sprayer, Rinse, spray dilute, Rinse+ detergent, empty, quick rinse again
Uncle washed out a 15 acre field of beet before not cleaning sprayer right, less well learnt

how vital are the 7 days and what are the consequences of cutting after 7 days

think you would get very dry silage and start to have problems with the fermentation process.
4-5days should be adequate. Is that not what they say on the label?

Hi Dar31 it can be very dry, any time Iv done it I cut the roundup stuff first and put it in the bottom of the pit, it preserves better this way as dry stuff on the top of the pit can go mouldy.

Price around for the 'roundup'. There is a huge variation in price/brand.
