Purchased car and issues

    Hey

Was wondering could I get some advice, just traded in my car and got a 08 BMW 1 Series, petrol, with about 40k miles on it. Have it about 2 weeks and when I was driving it was chucking, like dirty petrol.

Anyway on Monday when I was driving it I lost all power and engine light came on amber, rang garage and brought the car over, from time to time I had no power at all, in 1st doign 4k revs and doing about 5mph.

He said coil? was gone and would replace. Picked up today and was driving and engine light came back up and started to chuck, rang garage and they said must be another coil? and bring over and they would replace.

I have 12 month warranty on car from garage but dont want to spend next year getting things fixed. Garage said they done full service on car before I got.

    Questions are:
Is it normal in quite a new BMW with low milage for this problem?
In legal terms what are my options to ask for money back?

If it's an efficient dynamics model then they eat ignition coils. Happened me on a test drive of one. Was told it just needed a service.......

AFAIK they just replace one at a time. I'd try demand they do all 4.

None if it's been repaired now, seems to be only minor trouble.

By efficient dynamics do you mean the turn on/turn off when the car is stopped?

Well it was repaired and now back in garage for same issue. Was thinking it would be hard to bring car back. To be honest love it and just want it back and without issues

Yeah it is one and I was wondering was that causing a problem. At one stage on trip over to garage I lost power and the symbol for the on/off came up on screen with an error.

Is ther 4 coils installed on the car? it is 116i. If so will ask for all to be replaced and hopefully will be flying then

4 coils on that. Do a google on efficient dynamics ignition coils or similar. Know what you're on about when speaking to them. Is it a main dealer?

Thanks will check. Not a main BMW dealer, if that what you mean. Seems to sell a lot of Audi/BMW/Passat

One more question please, should I not use the efficient dynamics system all the time and turn it off and just use every so often?

If it saved coils I'd turn it off. Savings are minimal anyway.

BMW usually replace 1 coil first, then when the next one goes they'll replace all the coils.

When it starts playing up again, they'll replace 1 injector and coil, then when it goes again, they'll replace all 4 (or 6 for bigger engines) injectors and coils. When it goes again after that, they'll just continue to replace injectors and coils.

Hopefully OP you'll be lucky, but the 316 & 318's that came back to us recently tell a different story. Multiple main dealer visits and still running like a bag of spanners :-(

I know the one we sold to my Father in Law (:o) started giving trouble at 20,000km. Can't seem to find mileages for the others - dates, but no note of mileage.

What is it with BMW and their engines! Feckin outrageous. There seems to be a serious engineering deficiency at BMW that has been around for years now.

6cyl engines, at least the petrol ones, seem relatively trouble free, maybe its a punishment for buying a 4cyl BMW :D

How many miles will I get out of car before this goes again at worst?

    It might never happen again.

    no one knows

sorry to sound harsh but you cant just expect cars to never give any hassle this isnt a big deal, you are acting like its a disaster.

hopefully you wont have any more trouble with it, but if you do you have your warranty and go back with it again and again until its sorted

It's not a disaster but a three year old car with 40,000 miles? I think the OP has every right to expect better from a supposed premium marque, especially since the failing coil packs may be related to something BMW has engineered into the car (Start stop).

It will be along time before we see the Germans offering 7 year warranties, which would bankrupt them.

Alot of reports alright with seemingly no proper fix for this stuff. VW have undertaken a massive coil pack replacement program. BMW would want to look at doing something similar across the board.

Tell that to the 07 523i we still have on fleet that's had 13 injectors replaced and 15 coils

We had to replace that car for the original driver due to the ongoing issues and BMW wouldn't take it back, so we ended up finding another sucker driver for it. The exact same (08 version) we replaced it with hasn't had any issues though, so it might just be a once off.

I've actually driven it with a coil/injector blown, and a 5 cylinder BMW is nowhere near as much fun as a 5 cylinder Volvo :D

Coil packs are pretty much a consumable, they're expected to fail after a period of time and be replaced. 40k may be a little early but not radically so.

They may be now, but when is a consumable just another word for poor quality? I had a 15 year old E34 that never needed a new coil pack.

Ifm replacing the coils doesn't seem to be repairing the problem then it could be the chain. There was a BMW recall on the 116/316 etc a far as I'm aware.
