because they are not territorial like magpies and greycrows they are communal nesters /flock birds, the best way is with a ladder trap

Can you buy ready made ladder traps that you can assemble and dissassemble easy anywhere, seen a thread here before to make one alright? Can you purchase one under the vermin count with the N.A.R.G.C if they can be bought ?

You can buy ladder traps under the vermin count and scheme... the Meath RGC said so... give your regional game council the receipt.. to the vermin officer and youll get the money back when ye recieve your cheque/ grant.

Be careful with ladder traps.. dont put them near public areas and check them often.. sounds obvious dosent it!! But a certain dublin gunclub had a ladder trap and caught a buzzard in it.. it was in the trap for a whole week and a women walker called the national parks and wildlife services claiming an "eagle" was cruely caught in a trap. There was a big uproar when they contacted our club not happy at all. We just said it wasnt us (or anywhere near us!) but you can see what wouldve happend if this woman had gone to the Sun or the Sunday world with the photos she had taken!

The best time to catch rooks this way would be in a few weeks time when the young ones will be just out of the nest - these juveniles are typically much easier to bag then the more wary adults;)

No excuse for that, traps should be inspected once a day minimum. If not in operation then the ladder and roof panels should be removed so nothing can become trapped inside.

    They're quite easy to make.

If you prebait ladder trap for 4/5 days with roof removed using white sliced loaf . After this fit roof in evening. Should have big catch next morning, Be careful none escape when being dispatched or your catch rate will slump to almost nil. When your catches start to decline remove roof and start to feed trap until numbers build up again.
