    Hi all,

I am currently sitting my final exams and have a decision to make as regard to next year whether I do a Masters of Accounting in DCU or take the MSc in Accounting in DIT. I'd like to hear from those who have completed these courses and help me weigh up the pros and cons of both. The masters is going to be sponsored and I live on the southside so convenience may play a role.

Thanks in advance for your help!:)

Didnt actually do a postgrad in the end but looked into both and the general impression I got was DCU is better recognised(though DIT has a good reputation also) but costs a little more, has more hours and a heavy workload. Obviously DIT at Aungiers street would suit your commute better. Both will give you the CAP 2s which is what your employers want out of sending you to a postgrad at the end of the day. Have friends doing the masters in DCU and they say it's tough going but doable if you're committed.

Just finishing the masters in DCU and this is my perspective on the year.

The course: Its standard CAP 2 material PLUS thesis work, a critical perspectives on accounting and an IT module. Originally when I went in, my intention was just to get CAP 2 exemptions and was not so keen on the other stuff. However by the end, critical perspectives was one of my more preferred classes as we got to challenge the accounting profession and was very topical in light in recent corporate scandals.

We had a number of guest lecturers come in to talk to the class throughout the year. For example, Fr Peter McVerry from the Peter McVerry homeless trust, Mary O'Sullivan from the commission on taxation and various partners from the ‘Big 4’ came in to discuss various topics and answer questions from students. Also, there was a lot of group work and a couple of presentations during the year. If you enjoy that, then you'll get on well in those modules.

The lecturers: The majority of the lecturers were excellent. My advice, however, is to assume nothing when it comes to continous assessments or exams and ask questions again and again. All lecturers, however, were very approachable and if students had any issues or problems I found the lecturers to be helpful.

The class: Classmates were great. Although nights out were few and far between because of the workload (especially after Christmas), there was always something going on for people who wanted a night out. Made great contacts and friends throughout the year.

DCU: I thought DCU was was excellent - because of the facilities and how compact everything is. I found there to be a great vibe around the place.

Career: I did the course to help me get a training contract for next year. About half the class were in the same boat. By the end, I think everyone in the class had either a training contract or was set up with something in industry. The masters is looked on pretty well by all accounts.

So, to sum up my experience in DCU doing the accounting masters... Hard work and time consuming.. great for those looking for a training contract..... great for getting CAP 2 exemptions... great if you are interested in current issues surrounding the accounting profession... and great for meeting people and making friends and contacts.. but a tough year all the same. Would recommend.

    Hi guys
After communicating with the experts and also searching different websites I really became interested to pursue a master degree in accounting at DCU. Today one my friends just told me about a shocking news, he said 50% of the students in the master class are already sponsored by the accounting firms and the rest are paying the full course fees by themselves & they are not really job guaranteed after completing their course, he mentioned that I am going to have a tough year, workload ect.... and spend lot of money and time & may end up with nothing (NO JOB!!!), I was told that, it’s better to spend a little bit more and do the master in accounting at Smurfit if I really want to get something after that, master in accounting at DCU is tough for no reason and you sacrifice your life and money and time for a year!!! I just wonder if this is really true?!!!! The only reason that I want to do my master at DCU is to get a JOB after. Please give me some advice in relation to this important issue if you studied the same degree and experienced the same thing!! Cheers:confused::confused::(:(
