Most professional thieves will removre the sim immediately which will render these tracking apps useless. Best bet is to take out phone insurance. :)

I use watchdroid. Locks tthe phone on sim change and texts new number and location. Can force the alarm also, among other things.

Yes and proper thief will be smart but if you lose it in a public there is a better chance of getting it back from someone being oppotunistic.

remote full wipe if all else fails for piece of mind

Theft aware. It costs a tenner but it's very handy especially if your phone is rooted as when your sim is changed it'll text on a the new number to a phone of your choice. It will also turn on the gps without the thief knowing and send you their location on google maps.

It can also install itself in your system folder under a dummy name so of the thief goes looking for obvious security programs to uninstall they probably won't find it.

There's a trial available on the market.

Wavesecure is subscription based, but it will lock your phone, wipe it, track it via gps. It will also back up contacts, texts & apps. Its also not reliant on having the original sim & will send a text to your mates/your spare phone if another sim is inserted, it will also give a message to anyone who 'finds' it, with details of how to return it. + its now owned by McAfee.

... or just buy a HTC which has the ability to lock down & track the phone from their website as standard...

All these security apps are a waste of time. Thieves will just give the phone to their techy accomplice that will factory reset the phone (not complicated). Will only be of use against the very dumbest thieves.

The proper unique identifier of your phone = IMEI number. Thieves/hackers cannot change this easily (that's topic for another thread). If phone is stolen report the IMEI number and it can be blocked or tracked.

Most thieves around here are pretty dumb. They usually just go straight to cash converters to get whatever they can for valuable items.

Oh I agree. But as smartphones become more common they will wise up. Just wanted to make sure people know that these security apps are very easily circumvented.

@mono: Only the newer htcs have that feature I think.

If you lose your phone then you can remotely install "Plan b" from the https://market.android.com/, this installs on your phone and emails back the location, it will also turn on GPS for you, works brilliantly,

Theft aware claims to survive a full reset.

The only way to remove it is via ADB from the NAND

Only works on rooted phones. Will be removed by just flashing a new ROM (the stock rom for example). Not difficult at all.

I bought that watchdroid, at €1.39 its worth it, not to find it, but for the ability to remotely wipe your phone and sd card by sms if it ever goes missing. My gmail is my main email, has all my personal and work stuff, I use Google Documents and Calendar and all my passwords and bookmarks are in the Dolphin Browser with the Lastpass and Xmarks addons. Its a big privacy risk for me
