Not new news for anyone that plays video games... but since this is after hours why not post it here.

Story goes for the last six days the PSN service has been down because it got hacked. < Story here >
Many a PS3 user has felt the frustration of being denied access to the PSN service over the past six days, but today things took a turn for the worst when Sony announced that “a compromise of personal information as a result of an illegal intrusion” has taken place. Sony is currently working on informing all registered account holders about the information compromise via email, but have already laid out what they currently know and do not know within this post on the PlayStation Blog.

Basically, Sony today informs the masses that between April 17 and April 19, 2011 certain PSN and Qriocity service user account info was compromised and that Sony is addressing the issue by temporarily turning off these services, engaging an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full investigation into the matter, and taking steps to enhance security and strengthen network infrastructure by re-building its system to provide greater protection of your personal info.

In terms of the exact info that was compromised, Sony stated that while still investigating the details they believe info such as your name, address, email, birthdate, PSN/Qriocity password/login and handle/PSN online ID all now lie in the hands of the intruders. Of course, the big question is about your credit card information, to which Sony stated “While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility.”

The post then goes into great detail regarding suggestions about how to protect yourself and your personal information which includes providing links to credit score services and the Fraud Victim Assistance Division of TransUnion.
As for the service itself, well, Sony stated in the update that they have a “clear path to have PlayStation Network and Qriocity systems back online, and expect to restore some services within a week.”

Basically to give a bit more info.

the hacking group Anonymous said that they were going to strike sony after the media giant was introducing new ways to stop the hacking of the ps3 system and for suing a hacker called Geohotz after he was the one who created the hack.

So it was Anonymous who hacked the service.
But it goes deeper.... the hacking group said they would NOT acquire anyones personal details:

So the question is, is Sony spinning this so they can introduce radical security features?

Isnt it wonderful that they spend all their money and time trying to protect their data with DRM, protected content and whatnot on their ereader, bluray etc.
And they don't secure important data belonging to the actual customers who pay them.

No need to bring other consoles into it. Fact remains that Sony has failed to implement things properly, yet again. First the ECDSA algorithm which didn't have an all that random number like it was meant to, then the PSN which isn't secure... bad times for Sony and sony customers.
