I just bought myself a Desire S after using a Hero for nearly 2 years. I am incredibly happy with it - it suits my needs perfectly + I'm a HTC Sense Fan(droid).

I friend of mine is looking for a similar phone but is intending to spend a bit less... He wants an Android, but is keen to know what are the best phones up to this range level. He will be buying sim free (living in the Middle East, this is how most phones are purchased).

What phones should he look at & what features do you think are must have? I'm loving the front facing camera, but waiting patiently for Skype to release video... The original Desire is relatively reasonably priced (is it worth considering or just too old)? I'm not a big Samsung fan, but this phone is not for me, so I'm interested in all options...
