I have just purchased a 2nd hand engine from the UK for my 2007 Citreon Xsaro Picasso (1.6HDi). The supplier says that the replacement engine came from a crashed 2010 peugeot 3008 and has 10,000 done. I am a bit sceptical about this information and was wondering is there a way of checking the car that the engine was taken from by its engine number or some other means.

Try Peugeot themselves, if you get someone helpfull I'm sure they could cross referance the engine code...

With these engines I would be more concerned that there's no signs of the "black death" in the sump, than mileage or history, out of interest what happened the original engine.

The current engine is costing me as much on oil as it is on diesel and various mechanics have said that it would cost a lot to sort out. What is the black death?

A lot of these 9H_ engines suffer from oil degradation to the stage where oilways and gallerys become blocked.
Usually the failure of the turbo is what brings the problem to attention, due to oil starvation.
