Well now that all the details are out about the PSN hack, how do you feel about buying your virtual goodies on the PSN now?

Personally i'll continue using my pre-paid visa, never have more than 100 euro on it at a time anyway.

Comments about the service being down etc. are for the MEGAthread: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=71905612

    Nope.

Not worried about it at all. My only issue with it, is the fact the service is down.

The reason it's down is due to a bunch of self righteous morons proclaiming freedom of electronic devices.

Still the same ill just update my passwords every 4 weeks.....lol like that will happen.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,856 ✭✭✭Clover

No it has not changed as I use psn cards for the psn store, although I did have a pre-paid cc linked to my account I never used it and removed it from my account around six weeks ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,314 ✭✭✭weiland79

Just cancelled my CC and put a fraud alert on the account. Serious pain in the hoop. PSN cards all the way from now on.

Wifey's giving me a pain in the buzzcock aswell. ' I knew you shouldn't have been using the card on that stupid machine'

Blah blah blah shut the hell up wench, it was alright when you were buying DLC for Buzz.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 10,684 Mod ✭✭✭✭F1ngers

    I'll stick with the CC.
Couldn't be arsed cancelling just because it may have been compromised.
    I'll takes my chances.

credit cards are fine, you're protected with those but if i had a debit card on the account i would do something about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,342 ✭✭✭✭That_Guy

I've always used a 3V voucher so I'll continue to use those.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,262 ✭✭✭✭GavRedKing

Depending on the situation at th egiven time I would have used CC's on the machine and other times ive used th epre-paid PSN card.

I suppose if im out and about ill get a pre-paid PSN card but it would be so tempting to lump on the CC again.

I'll still be using my CC, just keeping an eye on my transactions for a while. I use PSN Cards at times when my card is near maxed anyway!

I dont buy a hell of a lot on the psn but ill be using one of the prepaid options from now on.

Other... I've a debit card so there has to be money in my account for it to be stolen. I've put the bank on alert for any strange transactions on my account anyway, but I'll continue to use it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,672 ✭✭✭tonydude

The banks are on alert already, there telling there customers not to cancel their cards as they'll be keeping an eye out for suspect transactions, well thats what they told me anyway :D .

I don't even have a credit card. Always used pre-paid cards. Everyone should have used those even if they had a credit card. The amount of hacking that went on even before this balls-up happened was unreal.

You just go to your local Xtra-vision, gamestop, etc and you buy the card for €20 or whatever. you scratch the back to reveal a code, go to PS Store, click Redeem Vocuher, type in the code on the card and voila, you have €20 credited to your account to do as you please.

works the same as Xbox Live points. You can buy them online as well im sure.

Very handy if your CC doesn't work on the US or Japanese PSN.

I voted PSN cards, but thinking about it further, I'll probably just end up using my card if they tempt me with something delicious when it comes to the point, its not an impulse purchase if you have to wait til the next day / weekend, drive down the shops, walk in, buy a card, get home again and type in some stupid billion digit code.

I voted PSN cards but I wouldn't rule out using my cc again. What's done is done and in the past. I'm confident that when the system is back up and running it will be far more secure, Sony just can't afford it not to be. So no my attitude won't have changed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 310 ✭✭Dunnie1982

I'll keep using credit card, the odds of it happening again are low after the massive media hype around this & Sony won't want any more bad publicity so will up their security. Also I don't understand the anger of some people that the PSN is down, do they have any lives at all. We've had the best weather in ages so can people just go outside & enjoy the sunshine, go for a run or cycle or maybe even a spot of fishing. What did these people do 5 years ago before online gaming became widespread?

...because they paid for a service (in that they chose a ps3 over an xbox,360 and bought games which utilise PSN), and thanks to sony's ineptitude/skimping on fully testing their security they cant use the items they paid for in a proper fashion.I've said this elsewhere, but if nobody complained griped and threatened to unsub whenever a service like XBL/psn/battlenet etc was down , the companies involved would provide the most minimum service they could (as its saves them money).
Wether people should "watch tv, go outside ..whatever" is up to them, but they should have the option to use the PS3 online since they've paid for it and right now thanks to sonys screw up they cant...

I won't be using my CC on PSN ever again untill Sony institute some major Data Protection changes.
I am shocked that Sony got away with such a lax level of data protection for so long.
What jurisdiction are there servers in?
As I'm very curious to know what Data protection laws govern them?
And when you think about it, it was only when they started pulling features and crippling linux that their system was attacked with any seriousness!

Whatever about the criminality of the act that hacked Sony in the 1st place....
And when you think about it, it was only when Sony started pulling features and crippling linux that their system was attacked with any seriousness!
Meaning this vulnerability has been there since day1!!
How can anyone be sure that there hasn't been a breach prior to this?

The fact is that the hack occured in 1 of 2 ways.
The current theory that someone gained access to data via PSN, implying that customer data was held and accessible in storefront servers!!!
No security layer protection at all and basically unencrypted and accessible to anyone who knew where to look!

Or 2nd option, someone walked into their data centre and downloaded the files onto a storage device and walked out.....
The fact that the whole operation is being moved points to me that it could very likely be option 2 as to how the breach happened.
    A disgruntled employee?
Some brightspark walking in to the data centre and through security ;) to download the DB and then walk out again?
This may seem crazy but consider this,Sony aren't just rebuilding the PSN they are also moving to new secure location!
If it was just a network security problem there would be little need of anything other than hardware upgrade and improved network software/security.

No system is hack proof, but basic steps can be taken to make it difficult!
Sony seem to have taken none of these(Until now) and their lack of communication to their customers in the aftermath is worrying too.
While it was a worldwide news story, I had no contact from Sony regarding my US or EU psn data being possibly breached until the 29th.....
Over a full week after they became aware of the issue!
I won't be sharing any CC data with Sony ever again until they publish their Data Protection policy and appoint a customer oriented Data Protection Director to oversee that policy!

Nobody mentioned 4 in the morning, there are plenty of offline games out there if you do suffer from insomnia, which I do myself.

PSN isn't a paid service, certain games have paid subscriptions such as DC Universe. The security has obviously been fully tested if it has been online with nearly 5 years without a major problem until now, in the past banks & even this site have been hacked. Online security can only be so strong until someone eventually finds a way past it.
" but they should have the option to use the PS3 online since they've paid for it and right now thanks to sonys screw up they cant.", They paid for the PS3 which they can still use, if your house got robbed it wouldn't be your screw up that caused it, so why is this Sonys screw up. Sony could have kept the service going and risked more damage but instead shut the service down until it is fixed which was the right thing to do.

Same here. I was always careful when using a cc. I don't have a cc registered anywhere online and prefer using prepaid cards if i can for transactions.

I've only ever used the pre pay cards because I don't have a credit card so....

will probably just continue doing this because it's only once in a blue moon that I actually buy anything on the PSN anyways so

The biggest problem is lack of detail. No detail at all other than an intrusion in to the network. Then they may have got credit card info from their servers. Followed by conflicting info that the info was lifted from 2 million individual playstations. At that point I figured my hardware firewall may have helped and I have nothing to be worried about. Now they confirm info taken from servers, although encrypted, I am wondering about the competence of sony to secure this data.

I would like the option to remove all my credit card details from their servers. After that I will only use prepaid option. The problem for sony is the revenue stream loss if everyone did the same. Impulse buying would collapse and EA in particualar would feel the pinch. The long term effect of this may be developers refusing to develop PS3 games and the death of the playstation. Not so I hear you say, look at the Xbox360 users using prepaid. But they have been doing this from the beginning, and Sony have only just started this in the last 2 years. I would wager that a very small percentage of us actually use the prepaid option at the moment. The loss in confidence in the PSN and PS3 could be the beginning of the end. It will also put the brakes on the expansion of playstation plus. Would you pay for a service that may get cut off at any moment ?

    I had 3 reasons for buying a PS3.

One, my 360 broke my heart it gave up so often. The new one is seemingly better. Even though the PS3 was more expensive I overlooked this.

Two, PSN was free. Playstation plus was a move in the wrong direction for me and a sign of things to come.

Three, online gaming. Xbox service is more reliable when you account for this outage.

Sony have given me reason to think of buying a 360 if my PS3 gives up the ghost. First generation 40Gb Fat one going nicely but for how long ?

I generally mix it up with psn cards and my credit card and Iv no problem with continuing to use it in the future and kudo's to them for handling the situation so well.

A few days ago I suggested this was most likely Data theft by a disaffected employee and after this piece of news http://psx-scene.com/forums/f6/psn-hack-inside-job-85869/
So now that it seems very possible it really was an inside job ;)
And its not just PSN anymore.....
But EVERY Sony Online Entertainment service thats affected!!!
Are people still going to be so eager to give Sony their details or their cash?
    I know I won't be ;)

Chances are its likely to be safer than ever and this disaster will probably not happen again. Could be hacked again but doubt Sony would be stupid enough to not encrypt peoples details and make it virtually impossible to get peoples details.

I think if there was fraudulent activity on your credit card as a result of this hack then I don't see how you could trust Sony again. I know I'd never buy anything from the PSN with my credit card if that happened to me.

It's actually been a good thing for me having my credit card stopped and the PSN down. Stops me buying crappy PSN games I don't need and running up a bill! :)

I'll be using PSN cards from now on.

my credit card has a very low limit, and all my savings are in another bank/credit union. the only thing I ever got off psn was two ps1 games. any PS3 games I buy a copy of, resale value etc... and a portable copy so you can go to a friends and play etc...

The credit card details on Sony's servers would have been stored in a manner which was compliant with card scheme rules. The question should be whether or not this whole saga has changed your attitude towards buying any items over the internet.

If this case causes a change I hope it is to the practice of companies storing card details. There's no need for it. The small number of sales which they'll lose from people changing their mind on a purchase at the last minute pales into insignificance compared to the fines which a compromise of card details will lead to.

The whole point of this hacking is disruption of the PlayStation network to shut it down temporarily,
not theft, to teach a lesson to PSN,
it will probably happen again if PSN dont come up with a proper solution and as stated above Sony is only as strong as their latest defence.
This group Anonymous have mottos like you make it we break it and never forgets never forgives so saying that there is absolutely no quick fix and dont be suprised if you have to pay for a subscription in the near future:eek:

Prob start using pre paid PSN cards now... Maybe I will buy them off the net using CC though, just not the PSN store as with the crack going on, I doubth anyone will let me use there CC for PSN games etc.. Though I can't see much damage being done.. I mean its like 1 in over a million chance that they would actually choose to use my CC... (Well thats the way I look at it)...
