Sky+HD In Apartment

    Hi all,

Moving into an apartment this friday. It's in a block of about six apartments. My apartment has it's own sky dish, even though the landlord tells me they're not really meant to be there, it's there.

He's told me the place is 'piped for sky and Chorus' and as such don't need the dish. I'm waiting on him to call me again later to go through this in more detail, but does anyone know what this means exactly?

Will my Sky+HD box work there or no?

    Thanks!

There should be a coaxal point or cable where you can connect a cable to your "LNB in" on the box.

Chances are there is a communal dish (that everyone uses) and its wired to all (some) apartments

If the cable / dish is there and its hooked up correctly then the answer is yes.

I haven't seen a communal dish, now I've been up to view it twice and it could well be on the roof (flat roof) but I can't see.

But the dish in my apartment is exactly the same as the one I'm using at my current house and the landlord said it was for a previous tenant here. I'll know for sure later on though, just hoping it wasn't one of those generic/resold 'basic sky' services that I've read about on here.

Setup is really nothing anyways. You can pick up sky's satellite with a frying pan as long as the lnb is in the right place lol.

I have 2 dishes / lnbs none of them are sky dishes and both pick up perfectly. The box should be able to decode as long as you can get a signal.

Does the dish have a quad lnb? You need 2 cables for Sky+ to work properly-i.e record one channel while you watch another.
It's not too hard to run a second cable alongside the other one-do it nice and tidy and the landlord won't even notice.;)

So there's only one cable coming from the outside dish, will the HD portion of the set top box work with just the one cable? Want to watch the sports in HD on saturday.. :)

yup it should work. (as long as its pointed at the right satellite)

You may also need to change the settings in the box to single feed mode as the box may not work with just the single feed, although I've had boxes which did.

Thanks to everyone who offered their assistance on thread with this one.

Thanks also to zerks who has been helping me by PM and sent me some good information and pics of different LNBs so I'll be able to recognise which type I have (single, quad, etc). I got the keys today and I'll have a closer look at the dish.

I always post up my results for future reference if anyones in a similar situation later so will update over the weekend.

Now, upon closer inspection, I can see that the dish outside my apartment has a quad lnb. Great - however - theres only one cable coming from it, and it runs into a hole in the wall behind the dish, around the side of the apartment (inside the wall itself) and into the sitting room, via this hole:

Also, it's about a metre and a half away from where the tv is. Sky said they'll be out on Wednesday, wonder if theres much they can do.

In the meantime, what kind of cable do I need to get to connect to this in order to watch tv? The one with the little copper bit inside.

You need 2 F connectors, and some coax

Have my cable and my F-connectors and will give it a go after work, thanks again to all for the information.

Ok, so I've plugged it all in and the box is saying 'Not Locked' under input 1 lock indicator. Accessing the installer menu and it says "your sky hd box is initialising" but stays like that for ages.. Any ideas?

Edit: i ran another cable from the dish to the box and it worked so the old cable must be faulty

I Know Some Cables if baddly wired can get water in them, and can have Patchy or no signal whatsoever
